To cap off this unprecedented special offer we have Alesong’s Double Barrel Maestro, which takes the Maestro Barleywine that was aged in Heaven Hill barrels and gives it an extra rest in Henry McKenna 10-year bourbon barrels. The Double Barrel Maestro pours as deeply amber as Maestro but adds bursts of red and orange at the rim. It has a sturdy tan head made of dense foam that sticks around for a while. Poured into tulip glasses we were treated to pronounced bourbon aromas of vanilla and seasoned oak with deep caramel, malty toffee, toasty brown sugar, and hints of figs and dates.
The first sip of Double Barrel Maestro enveloped our palate with oak, vanilla, caramel, and warm spices. From there every sip complemented the last, bringing in a bit of sweetness towards the long, well-rounded finish. At 15.9% abv we were expecting alcohol burn or discomfort, but that was nowhere to be found, even after a few minutes to warm in our glass. The Double Barrel Maestro shows off the brewer’s experience and mastery of the process and deserves the title of “Maestro.”
The Alesaong Double Barrel Maestro has great potential for long term aging, while also being very enjoyable right now. The Rare Beer Club has been allocated only 10 cases of Double Barrel Maestro; the rest being sold only through Alesong’s tasting room, if even available anymore as of this writing. For pairings, Alesong recommends braised chicken with tangy tamarind sauce, Rogue Creamery Caveman Blue Cheese, and pecan pie with bourbon caramel sauce for dessert.
