Sweetwater’s IPA presents a clear, light copper color with a big cap of off-white foam that drops plenty of lacing down the side of the glass. We fell in love immediately with the nose on this brew. The hop profile is sweet and complex, with a lush, juicy citric cocktail of orange and grapefruit, a touch of pine resin, and a floral undertone. Lightly doughy and mild caramel malt aromas underpin the expressive hops. On the palate the...

Brewed with sweet potatoes? What'll they think of next? This cream, or milk, stout is brewed with a dose of lactose sugar to sweeten things up a bit - nothing too unusual there. But sweet potatoes - that's a new one. Jefferson Stout (or "Jeff Stout" for short) pours a very deep brown color, capped with plenty of attractive brown foam. Look for some definite chocolate toastiness on the nose, accompanied by prominent caramel notes, a hint of...

Lazy Magnolia’s pale ale pours a bright copper color with brilliant clarity and a head that drops plenty of lace as it slowly recedes. Big aromas of American hops are apparent as soon as one starts pouring, with floral and citrus notes that are a touch herbal with perhaps a hint of mint and a bit of hay. The hops present themselves right away on the palate too, coming through with a pungent herbal quality and some accompanying citrus zestiness.
- ABV: 5.15%
- Serving Temperature: 42-48°F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass, Flute
- Country: Czech Republic
A pale double bock, huh? Well, we think it makes sense to think of this more as a riff on the Maibock or Helles Bock style. Expect a very attractive beer in the glass, presenting a crystal clear, rich golden color capped with a large crop of white foam. Grassy, earthy hop aromas come forward immediately, underpinned by some pils malt that lends a bit of a crackery note. Some soft floral notes are apparent as well, along with a distinct and...
- ABV: 6.8%
- Serving Temperature: 48-53°F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip or Snifter
- Country: France
This month we have quite the treat in store for you with Meteor’s Wendelinus “Bière d’Abbaye.” Named after a saint and brewed in the tradition of the monks of Wissembourg, Alsace, this beer pours a clear, deep golden color with a fluffy head that retains well and eventually drops to a persistent collar. The aroma is quite beguiling and very complex: look for a moderately sweet maltiness overlaid by a grassy hop quality, hay, light honey, and...
- Style: Abt/Quadrupel
- ABV: 10.5%
- Serving Temperature: 54-61° F
- Suggested Glassware: Goblet, Tulip, or Snifter
- Country: United States
We’re thrilled this month to be able to offer our members one of the finest quadrupels in the world. Southampton Abbot 12 is generally in any serious discussion of top-echelon quads, RateBeer.com users regard it as one of the top 10 examples in the world, and it’s one of the finest beers that have ever made it into our tasting glasses. There’s something about quads in general—that balance of rich and detailed full-bodied maltiness with a...
- Style: Bière de Garde
- ABV: 7.00%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip
- Country: France
This Bière de Garde represents a relatively rare “blonde” variant of the style—we’re accustomed to our BdG’s favoring amber coloration, so we were pleased when we came across this unusual version, as blonde BdG’s are pretty tough to come by. Use caution when popping the cork—we’ve got a live one here! Make sure the beer has had time to settle in the fridge for at least a day or two after shipping. Even after settling, expect a pop from the cork. ...
