This beer is Boulder's oldest recipe, dating back to 1979, and its longevity is testament to its quality. It's among the darkest porters we've sampled recently, pouring a nearly impenetrable, almost black color. On the nose, we picked up roasty dark chocolate notes along with some espresso and a touch of earthy, herbal hops. The flavor follows suit. Expect a nice roasty core from the black patent malt, augmented with deep caramel notes and a...
- Style: Red Ale
- ABV: 5.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 28
- Serving Temperature: 42-47°F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Aurora, Bobek
- Malts: 2-Row, Vienna, C-40, Carastan, Melanoiden, Munich
- Country: United States
This brew presents an attractive medium amber color with good clarity and nice crop of foam from an aggressive pour. Look for a prominent aroma of caramel, along with notes of toasty bread, nuttiness with a bit of a hazelnut bent, and a wisp of cocoa powder. Some toffee and apple can be found here too, accompanied by light earthy and herbal hop notes that overlay the malt core. On the palate, Nimbus Red Ale offers a variety of well-integrated...
- Style: American Pale Ale
- ABV: 5.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 38
- Serving Temperature: 42-47°F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Nugget, Willamette, Crystal, Centennial
- Malts: Pale, Crystal, Roasted Barley
- Country: United States
Boulder's Hazed & Infused is bottled unfiltered, so as its name suggests there's plenty of haze apparent in this tasty brew. Expect a rich amber color with a head that drops plenty of lace as it recedes. Big, bright, floral and citrusy hop aromas burst forth upon pouring, with a nice underpinning of caramel malt. We got some mild, resinous, herbal notes as well, plus a hint of tropical fruit and a dash of apricot. On the palate, too, this beer...
- Style: Pale Ale
- ABV: 5.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 38
- Serving Temperature: 40-45°F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Super Styrian (Aurora), Styrian
- Malts: 2-Row, Flaked Wheat, Carapils, C-15, Munich
- Country: United States
Expect a moderately hazy, deep orange-golden color on the pour, with plenty of foam to coat your glass as it recedes. Aromas of caramel and lightly bready malts are apparent, accompanied by a light fruitiness and a spicy, earthy hop aroma overtop. On the palate, we found the bitter and sweet components to be in a very nice balance. The malt backbone offers notes of rich caramel, moderate toast, and crackers, and is quite robust and...
- Style: Belgian Dubbel
- ABV: 6.5%
- Serving Temperature: 47-52°F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip or Goblet
- Country: Belgium
Corsendonk's dubbel is considered by many to be a classic – an archetype of the style – and we're very excited to bring it to you this month. On the pour, it certainly looks the part as it presents a rich mahogany brown color capped by the voluminous head that Belgian bottle-conditioned beers are known for. This is definitely another one of those beers that just has to be poured into a glass in order for it to deliver its full, and impressive,...
- Style: Stout
- ABV: 6.3%
- Serving Temperature: 50-55°F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Country: Australia
Coopers Best Extra Stout is a true-to-style beer that offers an aromatic nose; look for bold notes of espresso, black licorice and black currants with a faint yeasty mustiness. Expect the coffee-like aromas to become even more pronounced in the flavor profile, especially as it warms, with high levels of roastiness and a touch of vanilla and licorice. The hop presence works with the roasted character to enhance the overall bitterness, but...
- Style: Strong Golden Ale / Belgian IPA
- ABV: 10%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 60
- Serving Temperature: 40–55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Goblet, Tulip
- Hops: Tettnang Tettnanger, Hallertau Mittelfrüh
- Country: Belgium
If Malheur didn’t already have a special spot in our beer-loving hearts, we’d make room after sampling their latest release. We’re most accustomed to Malheur’s deep-dark beers—their 12 and Dark Brut come to mind first and foremost—but Zestig is more along the lines of their Bière Brut: pale, slightly creamy in texture, with a yeast-forward profile. We love Bière Brut, in the what-would-you-take-to-a-deserted-island sense of the word. And Zestig is...
- Style: Berliner Weisse
- ABV: 4.3%
- Serving Temperature: 39-45° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Berliner Weisse bowl
- Country: United States
NoDa Brewing’s Tart Attack takes the refreshing aspects of the Berliner Weisse style—lively carbonation, medium-light body, plus a core lactic tartness—and carries them on a different path than usual, with the addition of blackberries. There’s a natural pairing between Berliner Weisse and different types of sweetening syrup in Germany, the addition of the latter serving to soften the blow of the style’s vibrant acidity. (We prefer to limit...
