This 2008 World Beer Cup gold medal winner presents a medium amber with coppery highlights, topped by a tall crop of pillowy foam that laces the glass nicely as it recedes to a persistent collar. On the nose, look for a distinct citric hop fruitiness, prominent floral tones, and a hint of pine, all underpinned by a moderate caramel malt character. Take a sip and notice the super-juicy hop contribution with big notes of Mandarin orange flesh...
- Style: American Amber Lager
- ABV: 5.4%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 15
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Flute or Pint Glass
- Hops: Hallertauer, Willamette
- Malts: 2-Row, Munich, Crystal 40, Maris Otter
- Country: United States
Mustang's Sixty-Six Amber Lager pours, unsurprisingly, a medium amber color with good clarity and foam. A silver medal winner in the 2013 World Beer Championships, it offers up big, strong aromas of caramel, bolstered by a bit of fresh bread, a hint of fruit, and a touch of softly floral and delicately spicy hops. On the palate, look for caramelized malts to form the core, with a mild sweetness balanced deftly by a restrained hop bitterness.
- Style: Altbier
- ABV: 5.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 28
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Mug or Stein
- Hops: CTZ, Mt. Hood
- Malts: 2-Row, Crystal 45, Crystal 77, Carafoam, Wheat Malt
- Country: United States
Lands End is brewed in the style of an altbier, a style popular in the area of Düsseldorf, Germany for hundreds of years. Somewhat uncommon for a German beer, altbier is brewed with traditional ale yeast, reflecting a brewing era predating the discovery and use of lager yeast. But, altbiers are conditioned at cooler temperatures, like lagers, leading to a heightened crispness and reduced fruity esters. Lands End earned a gold medal in the...
- Style: Red Wheat Ale
- ABV: 5.3%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 14
- Serving Temperature: 43-48º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Cluster, Hallertauer
- Malts: 2-Row, Red Wheat, Maris Otter, Munich
- Country: United States
This wheat ale has delivered gold medals for Mustang from the World Beer Championships in 2011, 2012, and 2013. Pouring a bold, hazy orange, and capped by plenty of fluffy foam, it's an attractive beer. On the nose, look for a fruitiness to come across reminiscent of grape skins, underpinned by a richly wheaty aroma and a bit of a grassy note. On the palate, Washita Wheat is not the insipid, shrinking violet style of wheat ale we often
- Style: Sour Wild Red Ale
- ABV: 5.2%
- Serving Temperature: 42-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Flute or Tulip
- Country: Belgium
The classic Rodenbach is a blend of roughly 75% young beer and 25% aged for 2 years in 150-year-old barrels, so for the best experience be sure to use a glass with this beer and give it a few minutes to warm up from fridge temp. On the pour, it presents an attractive reddish-brown hue capped by a fairly thick off-white head that drops to a persistent collar. Expect an exceptionally complex aroma profile with a distinct, tart, fruity quality.
- Style: German Pilsner
- ABV: 4.9%
- Serving Temperature: 40-45° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass
- Country: Germany
König Pilsener is a truly authentic German Pilsener that was first sold by that name in 1911, and is brewed with careful attention to traditional methods, but with expert quality control through the use of modern-day technology. For over a century, beer lovers worldwide have been enjoying this approachable, easy-drinking brew. We’re proud to bring you this world class example of the style. Expect a pale straw color topped by a brilliant white...
- Style: “Italian Special Blonde Ale”
- ABV: 7.5%
- Serving Temperature: 47–54° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip or Chardonnay Glass
- Country: Italy
Birrificio Brùton’s Stone R struck us as such a fresh take on that general spectrum of ales, as a mélange of malted barley, wheat, rye, and candied sugar come together for a complex beer that has the juiciness of a fresh-cut grapefruit. This one caused us to sit back in our seats and reflect on whether or not we had been generally decent people (we had) and what on earth it was we had done to deserve such exceptional beers to cross our path.
- Style: Imperial Russian Stout
- ABV: 10%
- Serving Temperature: 54–61° F
- Suggested Glassware: Snifter or Brandy Glass
- Country: Netherlands
For clear examples of the diversity even within established beer styles, one could do a whole lot worse than look to the imperial stouts. For a style that is, at first glance, the darkest malts and high potency, there’s a whole lot of wiggle room when it come to the final malt and hop display. Most American versions tend to be a bit more charred and hop-forward than what’s offered up by Brouwerij de Molen’s Hel & Verdoemenis: an entirely deep...
