- Style: Pilsner
- ABV: 5.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 48
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass, Mug
- Hops: Sterling, Warrior
- Malts: 2-Row, Munich
- Country: United States
Like many Czech-style pilsners, Peregrine’s got just a bit of a richer hue than the more common German-style versions, presenting an attractive copper-amber color topped with a large cap of foam. There’s a generous usage of Munich malt in this brew, which is evident in the toasty, caramelized malt aroma. We very much enjoyed the subtle hop aroma as well, which offers a little bit of everything starting with an earthy note clad in a somewhat...
- Style: Black IPA
- ABV: 6.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 44
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass, Mug
- Hops: Summit, Pilgrim, Cascade
- Malts: 2-Row, Vienna, Munich, Wheat, Crystal Rye, Chocolate, Pale Chocolate
- Country: United States
On the pour, Mendocino’s Black IPA presents – not surprisingly – an extremely dark brown/black color topped with a crop of brown foam that retains well. There’s a distinct roasted character in the aroma akin to coffee beans, along with some earthy notes and caramel undertones. Riding atop the brooding malts is a vibrant, perfume-like, hop aroma that delivers floral tones and citric notes that are bolstered by the addition of orange peel in the...
- Style: Lager
- ABV: 5.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 22
- Serving Temperature: 40-45º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass, Flute, or Mug
- Hops: Magnum, Willamette
- Malts: 2-Row, Vienna, Munich, Carapils, Caramel 10L, White Wheat
- Country: United States
Bad Water takes the extra time and effort to use traditional lagering methods with their Western Lager, and it shows in the quality. Pouring a medium amber, this brew offers up a pleasant aroma; look for floral and spicy hop notes to come forward with a bit of an herbal zing, overlaying a base of caramel malts with a distinct bready quality. Our tasting panel found this lager very well-balanced on the palate as those bready, crackery caramel...
- Style: Saison
- ABV: 6.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 27.5
- Serving Temperature: 43-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Pint Glass
- Hops: Summit, Czech Saaz
- Malts: 2-Row, Dextrin, White Wheat, Crystal 75, Chocolate
- Country: United States
Until recently, we hadn’t seen many saisons in 12-oz. bottles; most are packaged in 750-ml and often carry price tags north of $10 per bottle. It’s nice to see some brewers like Bad Water are crafting approachable versions in standard bottles at everyday-drinking price points. Bad Water’s saison pours a hazy, golden orange color topped with a big head of lasting foam. You can certainly tell this is a Belgian-style ale from the aroma; the...
- Style: Witbier
- ABV: 5.5%
- Serving Temperature: 43-48° F
- Suggested Glassware: Goblet, Pint Glass, Pilsner Glass
- Country: Netherlands
Koningshoeven’s Witte Trappist is the first an only Trappist witbier, and unlike with most other witbiers, there are no spices or citrus peel used in its production. On the pour, there’s a fair amount of haze, as we expect from an unfiltered, bottle-conditioned witbier. The yellowy-golden brew is topped by a pillow of bright white foam that sticks well to the glass. On the nose, a distinctly wheaty malt aroma delivers some bready impressions...
- Style: Czech Pilsener
- ABV: 4.4%
- Serving Temperature: 40-45° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass
- Country: Czech Republic
Despite being a technologically advanced, modern facility, the brewery uses traditional lager brewing techniques to make their flagship beers, including open fermentation vats, cool conditioning in their lagering cellars and, of course, 100% barley malt. The result is a successful Czech pilsner. Rebel is a looker in the glass, offering a clear golden color topped with a robust and long-lasting head of fine white foam. On the nose, expect a...
- Style: Weizenbock
- ABV: 8%
- Serving Temperature: 50–57° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter, or Bordeaux Glass
- Country: England
There’s a caramel-apple angle to this overall, a classic pairing played out in beer form, but the pepper and clove, that fruit and lively CO2 as well—they all keep this quite present. The aroma’s glorious, especially with time to warm. We kept going back, that vanilla and pear and apple and caramel playing out beautifully alongside one another. (For us, the “double” aspect of weizenbocks is often assumed, and we wondered, is this the...
- Style: Saison
- ABV: 6.8%
- Serving Temperature: 45–53° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip or Burgundy Glass
- Country: United States
We’re excited to get this one into the hands of our members. Funkwerks has been making some exquisitely finished beers, and this one is exceptional. It’s a snappy, crisp saison with a yeastiness that seems as if precisely guided by lasers, or something. A careful white-pepper note distinguishes this from so many of the sloppier American saisons out there that never seem to find a clear focus within their ferment.
We’re so proud of our featured beers, that we list them going all the way back to 1995
No other Beer Club can claim the same. Check out what we’ve been up for the last 20+ years. We know you’ll be impressed enough to see what’s coming next month.
