Argus' IPA presents well in the glass: quite red in color with a head of tight-bubbled foam that drops lace as it recedes. As we expect from an IPA, there are a lot of fireworks on the nose. Luscious hops issue a delightfully fruity and floral aroma with some earthy undertones and unmistakable citrus notes. A robust caramel malt profile is apparent, lurking beneath. On the palate...wow, there's a lot of hops going on here.
- Style: English Pale Ale
- ABV: 6.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 42
- Serving Temperature: 40-45º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: East Kent Goldings, Mosaic
- Malts: North American 2-Row, Munich, UK Crystal
- Country: United States
Leaping Cow is a brand new beer from Lake Placid, and we're excited to bring it to our members. It's best described as a classic English-style ESB, but with a solid dose of American Mosaic hops to give it a very welcome twist. Leaping Cow presents a reddish-amber color with copper highlights and nice clarity. We really dug the aroma on this: it's fruity and floral, with a mango-like tropical fruit character along with notes of pine, lemon...
- Style: Chicago Common
- ABV: 6.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): N/A
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass, Pilsner Glass
- Hops: Magnum, Cascade, Northern Brewer
- Malts: Canada Pale, Canada Wheat, Briess 80L, Briess Roasted Barley
- Country: United States
Ironhorse is brewed in what is, despite the name, a fairly uncommon style known as a California Common, or perhaps in this case, a Chicago Common as Argus states on the label. Better known by Anchor Brewing Co.'s trademark, "Steam Beer," it's a bit of a hybrid between a lager and an ale as it's fermented with lager yeast but at temperatures more akin to ale. Argus' version, sporting a steam locomotive on the label, pours a brownish-amber...
- Style: English Strong Ale
- ABV: 6.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 42
- Serving Temperature: 45-53º F
- Suggested Glassware: Kölsch Glass (Stange), Pilsner Glass
- Hops: Cluster, Willamette
- Malts: 2-Row Pale, Crystal 45, Chocolate
- Country: United States
This English-style Strong Ale was a Gold Medal winner at the World Beer Championships, and it’s easy to see why. On the pour, expect a rich, dark, brownish-red color with a moderate tan head that leaves nice lacing as you drink it down. Quite aromatic on the nose, you can tell it’s a malt-driven brew right away with deep, toasty, bready aromas with a nutty and lightly woody undertone. On the palate, a big, rich malt profile offers up notes of...
- Style: Scottish Porter
- ABV: 5.6%
- Serving Temperature: 50-55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Country: Scotland
Pouring an impenetrable deep brown, almost black, and capped by a crop of light brown foam, Midnight Sun certainly looks like what we expect of a British porter. On the nose, look for the ginger root to come through – not in an overpowering way at all, but not sneaky either. Aside from the ginger, it certainly displays some classic porter notes, including roast, chocolate overtones, and a bit of woodiness. On the palate, expect the ginger...
- Style: Scottish Red Ale
- ABV: 5.5%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Country: Scotland
This Red MacGregor is actually a brand new version coming just to the U.S. (at least for now), weighing in at 5.5% versus the previous recipe's 4%. Our lucky members are among the very first to try it. Though already a much respected beer (the cask version having become the first Scottish beer to win the BIIA World Cask Beer Gold Medal), the brewery and the U.S. importer both felt that a bigger malt bill would help this wonderful session ale...
- Style: American-style Amber Ale
- ABV: 5.5%
- Serving Temperature: 45–54° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner, Dimpled Mug, or Nonic
- Country: Spain
Brewed with three charismatic malts, plus a combination of American/Australian hop types, we found ourselves able to better appreciate these things given the pitch-perfect production. We were really impressed by this beer, and by how quickly it disappeared whenever we’d get off topic, even for just a moment. There’s a ton of texture, but this is also a 5.5% amber with pinpoint carbonation and a perfect mouthfeel.
- Style: Gose
- ABV: 5%
- Serving Temperature: 44–52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Stange, Weizen, or Tulip
- Country: United States
Golden Gate Gose pours the color of honey, a golden orange topped by a lacy perimeter of off-white foam. There’s a lot of nuance in the aroma on this, even when cold: peaches, a hint of white pepper, honey, and then all the contributions of the locally sourced ingredients: that salinity from Bay Area sea salt; the local coriander and lemon verbena coming through grassy and potently herbal. Even from the aroma, this beer very much embodies...
