Brewed with a bit of maple syrup to add an interesting extra dimension, this nut brown ale pours a rich, deep hue that’s actually quite red when held to the light. This is an attractive beer – we’re off to a good start. On the nose, the malts are prominent, with a moderate bready character and big caramelized notes that lend a distinctly sweet impression. Look for a mild toasty and nutty quality, along with a subtle but distinct hint of maple and some spicy...
- Style: Imperial IPA
- ABV: 9.1%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 93
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter, Pint Glass
- Hops: Columbus, Simcoe, Centennial, Citra
- Malts: Pilsner, Crystal 10 & 80, Carapils
- Country: United States
As we would expect, this double IPA is the hoppiest beer that Crown Valley produces, made with several different hop varietals and weighing in at a very firm 93 IBUs. Offering an inviting golden amber color on the pour capped by a fluffy head of sticky foam, Gunslinger presents a beautifully soft and complex hop aroma overlaying notes of caramel. Dominated by fruity citric notes of grapefruit and orange, the hop aroma also provides hints of earth, mint, pine...
- Notable Ingredients: Lemongrass
- Style: American Pale Wheat Ale
- ABV: 4.7%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 15
- Serving Temperature: 47-52º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass
- Hops: Perle
- Malts: 2-row, Munich, Wheat
- Country: United States
Like most wheat beers, Jack Whacker is bottled unfiltered and, thus, there’s quite a bit of haze to its golden-straw hue – as we’d expect. Tommyknocker takes the unusual step of brewing this beer with lemongrass, and, indeed, there is a mild citrus quality which supports the distinctly wheaty notes in the aroma, which is also bolstered by touches of hay and grass. That lemony citric note comes through on the palate too, and it works well. While lemongrass...
- Style: Southern Gose with Spruce Tips
- ABV: 4%
- Serving Temperature: 40–47° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Weizen, or Chardonnay Glass
- Country: United States
Our featured Fullsteam is their Tree-to-Sea Gose, produced in partnership with our friends at Pints for Prostates. This is our fifth year working with them on a beer to raise money for improving prostate cancer awareness and early detection. (One dollar from every bottle sold will go directly to support Pints for Prostates’ efforts.) This final result uses North Carolina spruce tips as a piney extra facet, and involves blending two separate...
- Notable Ingredients: Pumpkin, Spices
- Style: Imperial Stout
- ABV: 10.6%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 48
- Serving Temperature: 50-55º F
- Suggested Glassware: Snifter, Tulip
- Hops: Chinook, Magnum, Saaz
- Malts: Pilsner, Goldpils, Chocolate, Flaked & Roasted Barley
- Country: United States
An imperial pumpkin stout? We were intrigued from the get-go with this beer, and still are. This very un-shy brew pours super dark, topped with rich, brown foam. Before one even gets to that point, though, the spice aromas will have already been emanating from the bottle. Pumpkin pie and gingerbread are front and center, but underneath the spices are the hallmarks of a very nice stout, including notes of chocolate, rich caramel, toffee, a bit of brown...
- Style: Czech Pilsner
- ABV: 5.2%
- Serving Temperature: 40-45° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass, Flute
- Country: Belgium
When Belgium was occupied by Spain in the 1500s, Spanish soldiers referred to the best inns and watering holes as “esta minetta” – “there are girls.” Comically to us, Palm derived the name for their new pilsner from this codeword. Brewed as a Belgian interpretation of a Czech pilsner, Palm brews Estaminet with Czech Saaz hops and lagers the beer for six weeks. On the pour, it provides the classic Czech pils golden straw color with a fluffy white...
- Style: Tripel/Gueuze blend
- ABV: 7%
- Serving Temperature: 45–52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Chardonnay glass, or Flute
- Country: Belgium
Vicaris Tripel-Gueuze pours a glowing, hazy yellow-orangish nectar. A firm, almost-instantly formed off-white head towers atop it, textured capping that sticks to the side with a resistant lace. This was one that had us raising our glasses to the light and saying things like, “Look at that…”, our voices trailing off. One can pretty much tell there’s something good in the glass.
- Style: Belgian Pale Ale
- ABV: 5.2%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 18
- Serving Temperature: 43-48° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter, Goblet
- Country: Belgium
A century ago, during a time in which pilsner-style lagers were sweeping Europe and the world, the Belgian Brewers Guild challenged its members to create a traditionally-made but lower-gravity Belgian ale to compete. Palm’s answer to the guild and the trend towards easy-drinking beers was their Speciale Belge, a sessionable ale with a very pilsner-like 5.2% ABV and 18 IBUs. Golden-amber on the pour with perfect clarity, it offers up prominent malty...
