Named after former brewmaster Dan McGovern, who developed the recipe for Belfast as a somewhat drier version of one he crafted at his previous Lake St. George Brewing Company, McGovern’s Oatmeal Stout is a World Brewing Championships Silver Medalist, and is one dense, impenetrably dark brew. Seriously, even a flashlight held up to our glasses couldn’t be seen from the other side. Amazing. On the nose, roasty malt notes rule the day, with...
- Style: Red Ale
- ABV: 4.75%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 32
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Summit, Mt. Hood
- Malts: Pale, Torrified Wheat, Carafoam, Black, Caramunich II, Dark Crystal, Melanoidin
- Country: United States
Belfast Bay’s traditional red ale pours a rich, deep red color capped with a robust head of beige foam. Look for big caramel and toffee aromas to greet the nose, with toasty malts and some softly fruity overtones. It smells great to us, and thankfully these archetypical red ale notes carry on into the flavor department, too. We found it well balanced among flavors of toasty bread, caramel, hints of buttery toffee, and fruity esters. Hop ...
- Style: Hoppy American Pale Lager
- ABV: 5.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 45
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Warrior, Saaz, Amarillo, Cascade, Citra, Crystal
- Malts: 2-Row, Caramel Pilsen, Vienna, Rye, Wheat, Oats
- Country: United States
Slingshot pours a bright golden color with lots of tight-bubbled foam. On the nose, expect a strong herbal and citrus zest character, tropical fruit, and a musky, resinous note. On the palate, the malts provide a satisfying core without being heavy, including biscuity, crackery notes with some subtle caramel and hints of wheat and spicy rye. Hops deliver more than a little citric bite, with a spicy herbal overtone. Look for the bitterness to...
- Style: Oak-Fermented Saison with Brett & 100% Mosaic Hops
- ABV: 6.5%
- Serving Temperature: 50–57° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Pinot Glass or Bucket
- Country: United States
Mosaic hops are known for kicking out tropical notes, and they’re present in abundance in this expressive saison from Anchorage. This is only the second time that this beer has been brewed, with the first brief run occuring in June of last year. In 2016, only about 650 cases or so will see distribution in the U.S. outside of the Rare Beer Club, and our members will get their bottles approximately three or four weeks or so before Mosaic Saison...
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 6.8%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 71
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, Centennial, Citra, Crystal
- Malts: 2-Row, Vienna, Munich, Wheat, Caramunich 40
- Country: United States
Brewed with several different hop varietals, Hop Manna pours a clean, pure golden color with a sizable head that drops to a lasting collar. On the nose, sweet hops are apparent in the air as soon as you begin pouring. There’s a good balance to the hop aroma with a wonderful floral and citric (think orange and grapefruit) interplay, accompanied by a note of cantaloupe and a spicy, sticky, resinous character. On the palate, expect big time hop...
- Style: Belgian Blonde Ale
- ABV: 4.7%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 22
- Serving Temperature: 45-52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Chalice, Goblet
- Country: Belgium
This Belgian blonde ale sure is a looker, presenting a beautiful copper-golden color with brilliant clarity and a robust crop of tight-bubbled foam that coats the glass nicely as it recedes. Off to a good start. On the nose, it certainly smells Belgian with that yeasty pepperiness and grassy-herbal noble hops. There's a hint of fruit here too. Flavor-wise, the fruit comes through bolder, with notes of apple and apricot, some lemony acidity...
- Style: Belgian Dubbel
- ABV: 6.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 22
- Serving Temperature: 45-52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Chalice, Goblet
- Country: Belgium
As we expect for a Belgian dubbel, Grimbergen's Double-Ambrée pours fairly dark, in this case a very attractive deep brownish red topped with a moderate level of foam. Immediately apparent are the fruity aromas we love in this style. In this case, we got notes of grape, fig, cherry, and candied berries. Look for some undercurrents of brown sugar and hints chocolate. The fruitiness comes though loud and clear on the palate with a mildly tart ...
- Style: Imperial Porter with Chocolate & Madagascar Vanilla Beans
- ABV: 9%
- Serving Temperature: 50–57° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter, or Pinot Glass
- Country: United States
This imperialized version of River Horse’s seasonal Chocolate Porter was made just for our Rare Beer Club members. It’s 9% to the original’s 6.5% to 7%, and has some extra additions of vanilla and oats. A pound of chocolate goes into every barrel. There is also a bit of lactose added to fully develop that milk-chocolate character. This is the very first release of this beer, and the only other distribution of any sort will be out of the...
