- Style: Doppelbock
- ABV: 8.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 45
- Serving Temperature: 47-52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass, Tulip, Snifter, Pilsner Glass
- Hops: Perle, Tradition, Tettnang
- Malts: 2-Row Pale, Chocolate, Caramunich 1 & 3, Munich Type 1 & 2
- Country: United States
Sudwerk’s Ultimator doppelbock (double bock) pours a very dark brown with reddish flashes, and offers up a big array of malty aromas. Look for big bready notes with a bit of a cake-like character thanks to some residual sweetness. We also picked up notes of dark rum, fruit-infused chocolate, rich caramel and, as it warmed in the glass, a hint of alcohol which merges with some spicy hops. The story is much the same on the palate, too, as this...
- Style: Rye India Pale Lager
- ABV: 7.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 70
- Serving Temperature: 49-57° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Tulip
- Hops: Mosaic, Simcoe, Amarillo
- Malts: 2-Row Pale, Heirloom German Rye, C-60, Victory
- Country: United States
In 2015, we were lucky enough to be able to include this brew (in 22-oz. size) in a special offer for our Rare Beer Club members, who were among the first to get their hands on this new Rye IPL, which had previously only existed as a test batch. We’re very happy Sudwerk has been able to keep brewing this delicious beer and that we’ve been able to secure a batch for our 12-oz. beer club members. This heavily hopped rye pale lager is copper...
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 7.25%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 45
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Cascade, Warrior, Simcoe, Palisade, Centennial, Citra
- Malts: Pale, Munich, Caramalt
- Country: United States
Heavy Seas’ flagship beer pours a lightly hazy golden-copper color with plenty of sticky foam that drops nice lacing as you empty your glass. The first whiff of Loose Cannon unabashedly declares itself an American IPA. Look for big citrus aromas which lean toward tangerine and grapefruit, accompanied by piney-herbal notes and a big overall resinous quality. The six different hop varieties come through with a big, expressive, juicy fruit...
- Style: Session IPA
- ABV: 4.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 35
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Chinook, Equinox, Hallertau Blanc, Cascade, Simcoe, Palisade
- Malts: Pale, Munich, Wheat, Caramalt, Carapils, Biscuit
- Country: United States
Brewed as a session IPA, Cross Bones weighs in at just 4.5% ABV, but stands as a testament to how lower-gravity beers can still deliver tons of flavor. Pouring an attractive copper color with a sizable head of lasting foam, Cross Bones looks good in the glass and is quite exuberant in the aroma department, too. Brewed with no less than a half-dozen different hop varieties, the beer presents a myriad of bright and complex notes including...
- Style: Doppelbock-Eisbock
- ABV: 11%
- Serving Temperature: 48-55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Snifter or Tulip
- Country: Germany
EKU 28 walks a bit of a tightrope act between a standard eisbock and an amped-up, fortified doppelbock. While their recipe has never been released to the public, we do know that it spends an astonishing nine months lagering, during which time the temperature is lowered until the beer starts to freeze. EKU claims, however, that the amount of ice removed from the beer is not really a major factor in its potent level of alcohol or its...
- Style: German Pilsner
- ABV: 5%
- Serving Temperature: 43-48° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass
- Country: Germany
As you might suspect from the name, EKU Pils is a pilsner, a style that has, very loosely-interpreted, become the most popular style of beer in the world since its invention in 1842. This style originated in the town of Pilsen in the Czech Republic, and it was the first beer to be brewed clear and golden in color (up until that time, beer was dark and rather murky). Though it’s always remained popular in the Czech Republic, the Germans...
- Style: Black English-style Barleywine
- ABV: 11%
- Serving Temperature: 55–61° F
- Suggested Glassware: Snifter, Tulip, Chalice, Goblet or Bordeaux Glass
- Country: United States
Pouring a dense, deep, dark hue, very nearly black save for some reddish flashes when held to a strong light, this brew looks impressive in the glass as its cap of foam slowly settles to a persistent ring. Chocolate overtones are obvious immediately in the aroma, invoking both milk and dark chocolate varieties, augmented by touches of ash and scorched caramel. There’s an earthiness too, strengthening with a good swirl, along with some spice...
- Style: Strong Trappist Ale
- ABV: 9.5%
- Serving Temperature: 52–59° F
- Suggested Glassware: Chalice, Goblet, Tulip or Pinot Glass
- Country: Belgium
This has long been one of our favorite Trappist beers, brewed by the smallest monastery brewery in Belgium, and only about 300 cases total are brought into the U.S. each year. It can be a challenge tracking this one down stateside, especially as of late, and for us this is one of those standout beers that really is worth tracking down. Even among the Trappist offerings, which are entirely stellar in their own right, there’s something unique...
- Style: Imperial ESB
- ABV: 7.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 50
- Serving Temperature: 47-52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Warrior, Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Centennial, Cascade
- Malts: Pale, Caramalt, Crystal, Chocolate
- Country: United States
ESB (Extra Special Bitter) is, despite how the name might sound, a very balanced English style that’s very much in line with what we might casually consider a pale ale in the U.S., albeit traditionally with British hop varieties. We can’t say we’ve had too many imperial or double ESBs, but after sampling what Heavy Seas has done with Winter Storm, we hope to encounter more. This winter seasonal beer pours a deep amber hue with crystal clarity...
