Brewed to celebrate the Shreveport Mudbugs NAHL junior hockey team (we love their angry crawdad logo), Penalty Bock presents an attractive reddish-amber hue with nice clarity and a fluffy head of khaki foam. Inviting malty aromas, as we expect and look forward to in this style, are apparent right away. Look for caramel, brown sugar, and a bready impression, bolstered by overtones of dried fruit reminiscent of fig or raisin, a hallmark of...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Altbier
- ABV: 6.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 62
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Stange or Pilsner Glass
- Hops: unknown
- Malts: Canadian 2-Row, Special B, Caravienna, Roasted Barley
- Country: United States
This superb altbier is brewmaster Ted Furman's original recipe, and the central flagship beer of his Golden Prairie brand, which he founded in Chicago in 1991. Now produced at Argus, this brew lives on, and the Chicagoland area is all the richer for it. Altbier (which translates from German as "old beer") is a style that emerged in Düsseldorf, and is the product of a style of beer-making older than the lager styles that Germany is most known...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Pale Rye Wheat Ale
- ABV: 5.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 14
- Serving Temperature: 40-45° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass, Weizen Glass
- Hops: Saaz
- Malts: Pilsner, 2-Row Pale, Wheat Malt, Rye, Acidulated
- Country: United States
Pouring a crystal-clear, bright golden-straw color topped with an off-white cap of foam, this easy-drinking brew offers up a crisp aroma of pale malt, wheat, a touch of apple, and spicy-herbal overtones from the Saaz hop contribution and the deft use of rye. In the flavor, look for a core of crackery pale and pils malts, with wheat and acidulated malt working together to offer a mild tangy character. As in the aroma, a touch of spicy rye...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: ESB
- ABV: 5.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 36
- Serving Temperature: 50-55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Warrior, Centennial
- Malts: Canadian 2-Row, Canadian Wheat, Extra Special Malt
- Country: United States
Brewed to honor Chicago's independent record label, Bloodshot Records, this medium amber beer is brewed in the style of Extra Special Bitter, or ESB. An English style, it's not particularly bitter by American craft beer standards; rather, it's an amped up version of an English Bitter, with more malt and hop character, and generally a higher ABV. Bloodshot Red offers up an aroma that starts quite juicy with really pleasant citrus and floral...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Session IPA
- ABV: 3.9%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 44
- Serving Temperature: 43-48° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, Mosaic
- Malts: Pilsner, Munich, Honey, Carafoam, Crystal 35
- Country: United States
Named in honor of Louisiana being the 18th state to be admitted to the Union, this session IPA gets off to a great start by looking inviting in the glass: golden-copper in color with a robust, dense, and persistent cap of foam. We found the beer immediately impressive on the nose with luscious, fruity hop aromas of citrus and tropical fruits softened by engaging floral notes. 3.9% ABV never smelled so good. Look for those hop aromas to deliver...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: English IPA
- ABV: 6.2%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 72
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Warrior, Cascade, Chinook
- Malts: Canadian 2-Row, Pale Ale, L-20
- Country: United States
Argus' IPA presents well in the glass: quite red in color with a head of tight-bubbled foam that drops lace as it recedes. As we expect from an IPA, there are a lot of fireworks on the nose. Luscious hops issue a delightfully fruity and floral aroma with some earthy undertones and unmistakable citrus notes. A robust caramel malt profile is apparent, lurking beneath. On the palate...wow, there's a lot of hops going on here. Thankfully Pegasus...
- Style: Imperial Red Ale
- ABV: 8.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 65
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip or Snifter
- Hops: Herkules, Mosaic, Citra, Amarillo
- Malts: 2-Row Pale, Crystal 40, Carastan 35, Munich, Carafa II
- Country: United States
The folks at Red River developed this brew as a sort of imperialized mash-up between a Scottish Ale, with all of its malty backbone, and an American-style IPA, with all of its hoppy glory. Pouring a very deep red color, almost brown, and topped with plenty of sticky foam, River Monster looks as big as it tastes. On the nose, we were struck by a veritable fruit cocktail of aromas; look for citrus, pineapple and other tropical fruits, berries...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: English Barleywine
- ABV: 10.0%
- Serving Temperature: 50-55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Snifter or Tulip
- Country: England
Pouring a bright copper-amber color with great clarity, this brew is quite aromatic. (And please do use a glass with this one for the best experience.) At 10% ABV, it's not a surprise to catch a whiff of alcohol, but underpinning that is a nice mix of caramelized malts and various fruity notes. Look for stone fruits akin to apricot and plum, along with light tones of dried fig and raisin, joined by some honey and just a wisp of citrus. On...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Winter Warmer
- ABV: 6.0%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Oversized Wine Glass
- Country: England
Well, this somewhat strangely named beer is much tastier than one might expect from its name. The name reflects that the beer is spiced, but don’t worry – there’s no dill in this beer nor does it present any other pickle-like qualities. Many winter beers are spiced, and the catch-all term for the style is “Winter Warmer” due to the rather high (especially by traditional British standards) alcohol percentage that often exceeds 6% ABV. Ridgeway...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Flemish-Inspired Sour Brown Ale aged in Vin Santo Wine Casks
- ABV: 6%
- Serving Temperature: 50–57° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Goblet or Pinot Glass
- Country: United States
This one’s a very special release from the folks at American Solera. Though Chase and Co. have previously done a small version of this base beer in more neutral red wine barrels, for this Rare Beer Club exclusive release they’re pulling out all the stops, and debuting the first of two beers they’ve been aging in Italian Vin Santo wine casks. American Solera was able to acquire eight of these casks total, with four of them being filled for...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Hoppy Belgian-Style Tripel aged in French Oak Chardonnay Barrels
- ABV: 10.6%
- Serving Temperature: 47–55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Chalice, Snifter or Pinot Glass
- Country: United States
We’ve been really enjoying the barrel-aged releases from Nebraska Brewing Co., and this one is our favorite so far. We ended up pouring our tastes into Reidel Vinum beer glasses, which felt like a reasonable size given the 10%+ ABV on this, and this ended up casting up a solid foam and modest haze. The entire span of the Barrel Aged Reserve Series we’ve been lucky enough to sample thus far has been exceptional, and this limited-release combo of...
