- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 7.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 95
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip or Pint Glass
- Hops: Summit, CTZ, Nugget
- Malts: 2-Row
- Country: United States
In the beer world, the term "S.M.A.S.H." refers to Single Malt And Single Hop brews. With Hop Whoopin', O'so turned the phrase on its head a bit, as they describe this IPA as "Single Malt and All Sorts of Hops." We have to say, it's pretty accurate. Hop Whoopin' pours a bright golden color with a white cap of sticky foam. Our bottles had a decent amount of yeast sediment, which is normal with bottle-conditioned beers; feel free to rouse it up...
- Style: American Brown Ale
- ABV: 5.8%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 30
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Columbus, Willamette
- Malts: 2-Row, Munich, Chocolate, Black, Carapils, 40L, 70-80
- Country: United States
A GABF Gold Medal winner, this brew yields a prominent aroma of fresh grains with some notes of toast and brown bread, moderate caramel, hints of maple syrup and coffee, some nuttiness, and a kiss of spicy and somewhat woody hops. On the palate, expect a blend of lightly bitter hops, burnt toast, and above all, a rich, sweet, nutty character (think hazelnuts and almonds) with deep-down caramel tones and a hint of cocoa powder. There's a ghost...
- Style: American Pale Ale
- ABV: 5.4%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 49
- Serving Temperature: 43-48° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Cascade, Centennial, Summit, Palisade
- Malts: 2-Row, Munich, Caramel
- Country: United States
This pale ale presents a medium copper-amber color topped by a fluffy and very persistent head of foam that laces nicely as it recedes. On the nose, look for a fairly complex array of aromas; we picked up plenty of herbal and piney notes melded to floral tones and a prominent variety of fruity notes including candied citrus, apricot-like stone fruits, and even some berry hints. Flavorwise, there's a fairly robust malt core offering a satisfying...
- Style: American Pale Ale
- ABV: 5.4%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 39
- Serving Temperature: 40-45° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Cascade, Centennial
- Malts: 2-Row, Munich, Wheat, Midnight Wheat
- Country: United States
420 Extra Pale Ale was brewed for the first time on the 20th of April, 1997, hence the name. Yeah, well, we’d bet a nickel and a dime that it’s not the whole reason behind the name, but we can’t confirm. The term "extra pale ale" is one that means different things to different breweries; sometimes it's interpreted as an amped-up, richer sort of pale ale, almost IPA-like, while other times it's literally a lower-gravity, paler, and less richly...
- Style: Session IPA
- ABV: 4.2%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 55
- Serving Temperature: 42-47° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Amarillo Hop Hash, Bravo; Dry-hopped: Ahtanum, Crystal, El Dorado
- Malts: Maris Otter, Pilsner, Wheat, Midnight Wheat
- Country: United States
Recently, there's been a trend in the hop market towards new forms of brewing hops, including concentrates, hop oils, cryogenically-separated lupulin, and more. Hop hash is one of these new cutting-edge formats, for which SweetWater is the brewery leader, having worked closely with Yakima Chief - Hopunion to get hop hash to market in the form of several beers, including our featured Hop Hash Easy IPA. Hop hash is a byproduct of the traditional...
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 5.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 57
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Bravo, Mosaic, Denali; Dry-hopped: Mosaic, Denali, Citra, Waimea
- Malts: 2-Row, Pilsner, Carapils
- Country: United States
TripleTail presents a bright and hazy golden color capped by lots of just-off-white foam which persists well and drops plenty of lace as the glass is drained. SweetWater calls this seasonal brew a "tropical IPA," and we think that's a good descriptor. Look for aromas of light pineapple, grapefruit-like citrus, melon, passion fruit, and pine, with a spicy-herbal overtone and a soft floral impression. The complex hop contributions lead to lots of...
- Style: Weissbier/Hefeweizen
- ABV: 5.4%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Weizen Glass
- Country: Germany
Pouring a hazy, golden-amber hue, slightly deeper than some others of the style, this unfiltered wheat beer develops a voluminous head of foam, as we expect. Use a weizen glass or, if you don't have one, try another vertically-oriented glass like a pilsner glass or a stange so the head has room to rise. On the nose, look for yeast- and hop-driven notes, with spicy clove-like herbal tones and moderate noble hop aromas, along with touches of...
- Style: Schwarzbier
- ABV: 4.8%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Flute, Pilsner Glass
- Country: Germany
If you think dark beers are all big and heavy, Köstritzer will challenge those notions. Not only is its level of alcohol relatively low at 4.8%, it is not a thick, chewy beer; in fact, a beer’s color actually has nothing to do with its body. Nor does this brew present a particularly bitter, overly-charred character. On the pour it certainly is dark, with some garnet flashes when held to the light, and a rich, creamy looking light brown head...
- Style: Belgian-Style Strong Golden Ale aged in Merlot barrels w/ Cranberries, Tart Cherries & Dark Sweet Cherries
- ABV: 10%
- Serving Temperature: 48–55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter or Pinot Glass
- Country: United States
From Yazoo Brewing’s Embrace The Funk program, we’re excited to feature Vérifiez Vos Fruits! this month as a Rare Beer Club exclusive. The name translates from French as Check Your Fruit, and this complex wild ale from Yazoo definitely includes some fruit you should check out. The hefty base beer here is somewhere between a Belgian-style tripel and golden strong ale, and its incredibly intricate yeast profile originates from twelve (!) different...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Anglo-Russo Imperial Stout
- ABV: 8.7%
- Serving Temperature: 52–58° F
- Suggested Glassware: Goblet, Snifter, Tulip or Pinot Glass
- Country: United States
We’ve been enjoying everything we’ve crossed thus far from Spencer Brewery—but Trappist Imperial Stout blew us away. Described as (approximately) an “Anglo-Russo imperial stout,” it offers the drinkability and hugely complex malt range of the finest Belgian strong ales, and adds in the delicious roast and bitter-chocolate qualities of some of the tastiest American and Russian-style imperial stouts. There’s a surprisingly firm hop bitterness...
We’re so proud of our featured beers, that we list them going all the way back to 1995
No other Beer Club can claim the same. Check out what we’ve been up for the last 20+ years. We know you’ll be impressed enough to see what’s coming next month.
