This year-round offering from Ellicottville pours a beautiful medium-amber color with good clarity and a thick head of long-lasting foam. The aroma caught our attention right away with big juicy fruit notes including citrus, definitely, but also pineapple and other tropical fruity and floral tones. Look also for a bit of a berry-like impression and some undercurrents of earth and exotic spice. The story is much the same in the flavor, which is fine by us; the six different hop varieties grab lots of attention with all the...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Winter Warmer
- ABV: 7.8%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 38
- Serving Temperature: 47-52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Goblet, or Pint Glass
- Hops: Traditional English Hops
- Malts: 2-Row Pale, Caramel, Other Specialty Malts
- Country: United States
One of our favorite aspects of the arrival of winter is the arrival of winter warmers (not to mention all the other myriad holiday ale interpretations that hit the market too). Stegmaier's entry in this seasonal category is a deep red-colored ale capped with a head of light beige foam. Prominent toffee and caramel notes are readily apparent in the aroma, along with some fruity esters and brown sugar. On the palate, this is one richly malty...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 6.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 81
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Columbus, Cascade, Centennial, Amarillo
- Malts: 2-Row, Cara 8, Chocolate
- Country: United States
This winter seasonal from Ellicottville is certainly among the hoppier winter beers we've come across in quite a while. Pouring a rich amber hue and capped by plenty of foam, Ski Bum offers up quite an inviting aroma. Prominent citrus notes were clearly what the brewers were going for given their choice of hop varieties, and they succeeded. Look for blended notes of lemon, grapefruit, and orange backed up by hints of stone fruit and melon. The...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Porter
- ABV: 5.6%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 25
- Serving Temperature: 50-55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Tettnang, Cascade
- Malts: 6-Row, Various Roasted Malts
- Country: United States
This brew presents a very dark and virtually opaque color, which is deep even for a porter, and is topped by a cap of deep brown foam. On the nose, look for a very prominent roasted character along with notes of dark chocolate and hints of coffee. Light hop aromas come through with tones of earth and just a hint of floral citrus. In the flavor: big roasted notes take center stage with a well-toasted and somewhat scorched bready impression...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Citrus IPA
- ABV: 5.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 60
- Serving Temperature: Citrus IPA
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass, Mug, Wide Flute
- Hops: Centennial, Citra
- Malts: 2-Row, White Wheat, C-60
- Country: United States
Over the last few years, as the IPA category has expanded dramatically and spun off a variety of different sub-styles and interpretations, we've seen a lot of citrus-infused IPAs brewed with the actual juice or peel of oranges, lemons, grapefruits, tangerines, and more. It's a natural fit for IPAs brewed with citrus-focused hop varieties. Keepin' It Peel is Ellicottville's entry into the category, using both grapefruit and lime peel. This brew...

- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 6.7%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 55
- Serving Temperature: 47-52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Centennial, Cascade, Nugget
- Malts: Centennial, Cascade, Nugget
- Country: United States
This IPA from Stegmaier pours an attractive deep copper color with a bit of haze, capped by an inch of beige foam from an aggressive pour. Stegmaier employs 500 lbs of hops per batch, and they're readily apparent on the nose; we picked up some orangey notes, citrus blossoms, and light grassy, spicy tones, supported by a light undercurrent of caramel. On the palate, this IPA was built with a robust malt backbone which delivers a core of toast...
- Bottle Size: 330-ml
- Style: Belgian Dubbel
- ABV: 6.5%
- Serving Temperature: 45-52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Chalice, Goblet
- Country: Belgium
As we expect for a Belgian dubbel, Grimbergen's Double Ale pours fairly dark, in this case a very attractive deep brownish red topped with a moderate level of foam. Immediately apparent are the fruity aromas we love in this style. Wafting up from this brew, we got notes of grape, fig, cherry, and candied berries. Look for some undercurrents of brown sugar and hints chocolate. The fruitiness comes though loud and clear on the palate with a...

As one of our two featured offerings this month, we’ve been looking forward to getting this special, exclusive release from Calicraft Brewing Co. out to our members. We featured their sparkling ale Buzzerkeley a few years back, and the highly positive response to that beer had us wanting to circle back again at the next good opportunity. Well... that good opportunity’s finally presented itself. The earliest samples we had of the brewery’s rare...

We’re excited to showcase Golden Prairie’s Doppel Alt this month as an exclusive offer to our Rare Beer Club members. This new release from Golden Prairie is going to be especially limited, with the first ever distribution of it going straight to The Rare Beer Club. It will see some light public availability in 2018, primarily in kegs around the Chicago area, plus a very limited number of bottles to be sold out of the brewery’s tasting room.
We’re so proud of our featured beers, that we list them going all the way back to 1995
No other Beer Club can claim the same. Check out what we’ve been up for the last 20+ years. We know you’ll be impressed enough to see what’s coming next month.
