Pouring a crystal clear bright straw color with a cap of crisp white foam, Nebraska Pils looks good in the glass as we lift it up to take a sniff. Hop aromas come forth with some lightly spicy notes along with plenty of earth, some herbal-grassy character, and mild citric and floral tones. While Nebraska has chosen to put an American spin on their Pils by selecting Sterling and Liberty hops, which were both developed in Oregon, they are both...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Robust Porter
- ABV: 6.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 60
- Serving Temperature: 50-55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Nugget, Fuggle
- Malts: 2-Row, Special B, Roasted Barley, Black Patent, Caramunich III
- Country: United States
Raincloud presents an extremely dark, almost black, color on the pour, topped with a head of light brown foam that drops to a persistent collar. On the nose, the big roasty notes expected from a robust style of porter make themselves known straight away. Scorched coffee, pure cacao, and a touch of hazelnut can be found here, and as the beer warms in the glass we found additional notes of dried dark fruits lurking beneath, akin to raisin and fig...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Double IPA
- ABV: 8.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 101
- Serving Temperature: 45-52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip or Snifter
- Hops: Nugget, Zythos, Green Bullet, Southern Cross
- Malts: 2-Row, Pilsner, Marris Otter, Rye, Spelt
- Country: United States
This amped up double IPA presents a lightly hazy copper-amber color with a big cap of foam that persists really well and laces the glass nicely. On the nose, look for a rather complex hop profile; we picked up plenty of citrus juice and zest with lemony impressions, floral notes, prominent spice, touches of melon and pine wood, and, interestingly, perhaps even a bit of darker fruit. In the flavor department, expect a fruity hop impression with...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 6.9%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 72
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Warrior, Chinook, Citra, Centennial
- Malts: 2-Row, Munich, Midnight Wheat
- Country: United States
Nebraska’s IPA presents a rich medium amber color in the glass, topped by a robust head which drops sticky lace as it recedes. Built as a “West Coast” style IPA, there are plenty of complex hop aromas suggesting grapefruit zest, pine, herbal spice, and a touch of earth. Take a sip and – pow! There’s a lot of hops going on here! Look for big, zesty citrus notes to join with an equally big herbal, spicy, piney kick. When a beer offers so much...
- Bottle Size: 330-ml
- Style: Eisbock
- ABV: 9.2%
- Serving Temperature: 52-60° F
- Suggested Glassware: Snifter or Tulip
- Country: Germany
Well, this is it—the original Bavarian Eisbock, and it’s as appreciated now as it was when it first became popular so many years ago. How appreciated is it, you ask? There’s actually a beer festival devoted to eisbock that’s celebrated in Kulmbach every March. The occasion begins with a ceremonial chopping open of an icy wooden barrel from which flows the malty guest of honor.
- Bottle Size: 330-ml
- Style: Dunkel
- ABV: 4.7%
- Serving Temperature: 45-52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Mug or Stein
- Hops: Perle
- Country: Germany
Weltenburger's Barock (which translates as "baroque") Dunkel is truly a benchmark for the style and it has the hardware to back it up including World Beer Cup gold medals in 2004, 2008, and 2012. In our glass, it presents a clear, medium bronze-brown hue topped by a prominent head of tan foam that retains well before dropping to a lasting collar. As we expect for a Bavarian dunkel, the aroma tilts decidedly towards the malty side, with deep...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Dry-Hopped Saison with Tea
- ABV: 7.5%
- Serving Temperature: 48–55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Chalice, or Chardonnay Glass
- Country: Canada
We’ve been putting the pieces together on this exclusive release from Brasserie Dunham for a while now. The initial plan was to aim for a 750mL bottling of Leo’s Early Breakfast IPA, a classic IPA with guava and Earl Grey tea. Instead, Dunham suggested a wholly new venture into the world of tea and hoppy beer—and as a result we’re able to offer our Rare Beer Club members Brasserie Dunham’s Pale Duck as an exclusive offering this month. It’s a...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale
- ABV: 8%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter or Oversized Wine Glass
- Country: Belgium
In terms of appearance, the beer has an almost cola-like look—deep brown with ruddy hues in the light and definitely on the darker side of the spectrum for a Belgian Strong Dark Ale. Giving a firm pour, the beer will be adorned with a pale tan head that begins to cling to the glass immediately as it decays. It greets the nose with a ton of complex esters and phenols. Look for notes of very young, under ripened apricots and plantains, a subtle mustiness...
