- Country: United States
Pouring a copper-amber color with a long-lasting cap of foam, Mad Anthony's is a good looking pale ale as it rests in our glass. The beer is named in honor of an American brigadier general from the Revolutionary War named Anthony Wayne, who was purported to have gone mad due to lead poisoning after being shot multiple times. We're not sure how legit that explanation for his madness is, but it sure makes for a good story. And we think he'd be...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 7.2%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 70
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Amarillo, Centennial
- Malts: Pale, Caramel, Malted Wheat
- Country: United States
While it's not often advertised, brewers have a tendency to tweak and adjust their recipes over time due to changing availability of hops, malts, customer tastes, or their own need to simply tinker. So, we were a bit surprised when we compared this beer's current specs to the last time we featured it almost 10 years ago. ABV, IBUs, malt bill, hop selection—they were all the same. It's something we've rarely seen after so much time, but it goes...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Scottish Ale
- ABV: 7.05%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 25
- Serving Temperature: 48-53° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Fuggle, East Kent Golding
- Malts: 2-Row Pale, Munich, Crystal
- Country: United States
This brew is Erie's flagship product, and it won gold at the 2009 GABF in the Scottish Ale category after taking the bronze the previous year. Pouring a very pretty, rich, amber color, Railbender is clearly a malt-forward beer from the first sniff. Lightly bready caramel malt aromas come forth right away, with a significant toffee-like quality. Expect the hops to be soft, adding a bit of a leafy/woody quality with a touch of spice. Characteristic...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American Porter w/ Cacao Nibs
- ABV: 5.9%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 39
- Serving Temperature: 48-53° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Nugget, Willamette, Mt. Hood
- Malts: Pale, Caramel, Chocolate, Black, Chocolate Wheat
- Country: United States
Brewed with real cacao nibs, this 2014 World Beer Cup Gold medal and 2015 US Open Beer Championship Silver medal winner presents very dark, almost black, in the glass, capped by a robust head of rocky foam that laces nicely as it slowly recedes. Mocha aromas jump out right away, bolstered by rich caramel and bready undertones. On the palate, look for the chocolate notes to come forth immediately, but not in the gimmicky, over-the-top way of...
- Bottle Size: 330-ml
- Style: English Porter
- ABV: 5.0%
- Serving Temperature: 50-55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Country: Scotland
WooHa's Porter pours a very dark brown with a cap of beige foam. As with many darker beers, we'd recommend letting this brew warm for a few minutes out of the fridge before drinking, in order for the flavors to all emerge properly. In the aroma, we picked up plenty of roasted malt notes including bitter chocolate, coffee grounds, and scorched caramel, along with an undertone of raisin skin. Those big roasty notes come through on the palate, too...
- Bottle Size: 330-ml
- Style: IPA
- ABV: 6.2%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Country: Scotland
On the pour, this is one deeply-colored IPA, presenting an unfiltered amber-brown topped by sticky foam that laces as it recedes very slowly. We picked up plenty of inviting fruity and floral notes in the aroma including tropical and stone fruits, a hint of berry, light herbal spice and a touch of citrus. WooHa built their IPA with a hefty malt bill, creating a brew with a robust backbone of toasty and caramel notes and a luscious, well-bodied...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Double IPA
- ABV: 9.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 85
- Serving Temperature: 45-52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip or Pint Glass
- Hops: Simcoe, Mosaic, Amarillo, Centennial
- Malts: Pale, Caramel, Wheat
- Country: United States
This double IPA is Boulder's newest year-round release, and we're excited to have a chance to bring it to our members this month. Spaceman presents a vibrant orange in the glass capped by a light khaki head that retains well despite the big 9% ABV. On the nose, look for it to come across quite fruity with prominent orangey citrus along with soft floral notes, hints of pine and berry, some stone fruit, and mild caramel malt undertones. It gets...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Hazy IPA
- ABV: 6.9%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Simcoe, Mosaic, Ekuanot
- Malts: Pale, Wheat, Flaked Oats
- Country: United States
Hazy New England-style IPAs are all the rage these days, and we have to admit we're on the bandwagon too. Boulder's foray into the style started off as a limited small-batch offering but quickly became a crowd favorite and was upgraded to full production status. Pouring a bright golden hue with plenty of haze (we stirred up our can during the pour), Due East offers up quite a vibrant aroma profile. Look for very juicy grapefruit-like citrus...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 6.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 75
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Citra, Idaho 7, Cashmere
- Malts: 2-Row Pale, Munich, Crystal
- Country: United States
It may be an unusual sort of name, but like all of Erie's beers, Misery Bay IPA's moniker has an historical angle. It was named in remembrance of the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. So now that we've explained what's going on with that, let's dive in. On the pour, expect a lightly hazy golden orange color topped with some just-off-white foam that leaves a bit of lacing as it recedes. Lush floral, citric fruit aromas burst forth...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Farmhouse Imperial Stout
- ABV: 10.8%
- Serving Temperature: 55–61° F
- Suggested Glassware: Snifter, Tulip, Chalice, or Pinot Glass
- Country: United States
Jester King’s Black Metal currently sees very limited distribution, with only about 20 cases sold in the U.S. in 2018. This year’s limited run will be predominantly heading to our Rare Beer Club members, with around 50 to 75 cases left over for distribution solely in Texas. Jester King Black Metal is brewed with a variety of malted barleys and rolled oats, English-style hops, aerated and filtered Texas Hill Country well water, and...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Weizenbock (dark wheat ale)
- ABV: 10.5%
- Serving Temperature: 50–57° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Chalice, or Weizen Glass
- Country: Canada
Les Trois Mousquetaires’ Grande Cuvée Weizenbock is a 10.5% ABV dark wheat ale that perfectly showcases what this brewery is up to when it comes to crafting traditional German beer styles. Weizenbocks, for those not familiar, combine copius amounts of wheat to the complex maltiness of a bock or doppelbock. The net result, more often than not, proves to be surprisingly drinkable beers often weighing in at 8+% ABV, with lush layers of detailed...
