This Belgian-style tripel presents a golden-amber color in the glass, a somewhat deeper shade than many others of the style, capped by a fluffy head of light beige foam. On the nose, look for a smooth undertone of caramelization overlaid with plenty of engaging brighter aromatics. Brewed with an authentic Belgian Trappist yeast strain, it offers up the yeast-driven notes we love in the style: look for touches of bubblegum and hints of banana...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American Brown Ale
- ABV: 5.4%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 11
- Serving Temperature: 47-52º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Perle, Saaz
- Malts: Munich, English, Chocolate
- Country: United States
Dos Perros (“Two Dogs”) has been one of Yazoo’s flagship beers since the very beginning, and it’s an interesting brown ale brewed with German and English malts, German and Czech hop varieties, and a dash of maize to lighten the body for a bit of a Mexican impression. On the pour, we get a deep brown color with reddish highlights and great clarity, with a cap of fluffy tan foam. In the aroma, look for a richly malty character as it offers up...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American Blonde Ale
- ABV: 4.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 8
- Serving Temperature: 42-47º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Falconer’s Flight, Golding, Czech Saaz
- Malts: Pilsen, Munich, Carapils
- Country: United States
River Horse’s summer ale presents a bright yellowy-golden hue in the glass, topped by plenty of white foam. In the aroma, look for a clean pale malt undertone with lightly bready hints. Hops are inviting, delivering a deftly subtle mix of citrus impressions, tropical and stone fruits, and a pleasant spicy note. On the palate, this blonde ale comes through super drinkable and refreshing. We get a crackery center which is light but satisfying...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Hefeweizen
- ABV: 5.4%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 17
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Weizen Glass, Pilsner Glass
- Hops: Perle
- Malts: Pale, Wheat, Acidulated
- Country: United States
Winner of Gold and Bronze at the 2004 and 2012 Great American Beer Festivals, respectively, Yazoo’s Hefeweizen presents a hazy golden color with a good deal of white foam, as we expect for the style. Fermented with an authentic Bavarian yeast strain, it unsurprisingly offers up a true-to-style aroma profile with yeast-driven notes of clove, banana esters, and bubblegum. On the palate, look for these notes to take center stage. We get tons of...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 5.7%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 45
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass, Pint Glass, Mug
- Hops: Chinook, Falconer's Flight, Centennial
- Malts: Pilsen, CaraPils, Melanoidin, Honey
- Country: United States
Pouring a rich and hazy amber color topped with ample foam, this IPA offers a very expressive aroma that really drew us in. Brewed with multiple varieties of hops (and Falconer’s Flight is itself a blend of several varieties), it’s no surprise to find quite a complex array of very fruity aromas including pineapple, orange, mango, passion fruit, tangerine, grapefruit, and even a hint of berry, not to mention floral overtones and a dollop of...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: New England-style Hazy IPA
- ABV: 6.8%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 38
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass or Pint Glass
- Hops: Amarillo, Bravo, Citra
- Malts: Pale, Flaked Wheat, Flaked Oats, Flaked Barley
- Country: United States
This appropriately named, Nashville-brewed hazy IPA presents a super hazy orange color in the glass with a big topping of just off-white foam that leaves sheets of lace as we drink it down. On the nose, look for a very juicy character from this double dry-hopped IPA, with layers of citrus evoking orange and grapefruit, along with softer tropical fruit and flora. On the palate, this is a quintessential hazy IPA as the mouthfeel is lushly...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: New England-style Hazy IPA
- ABV: 5.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 80
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass or Pint Glass
- Hops: Strata, Sabro
- Malts: Pilsner, Malted Oats, Vienna, Flaked Oats
- Country: United States
Hazy IPAs are all the rage these days, and Yazoo offers up another interpretation with their Calla IPA featuring a pair of lesser-known hop varieties. On the pour, we get a well-hazed vibrant yellowy golden color capped by pale foam. An inviting aroma issues notes of fresh citrus tending toward tangerine backed up by milder grapefruit and hints of lemon-lime. Look for some grassy tones here too, amidst some herbal, spicy flourishes. The aroma...
- Bottle Size: 330-ml
- Style: English Pale Ale
- ABV: 5.0%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass, Wide Flute
- Country: England
This iconic British ale is quite stunning in the glass, presenting a rich reddish-amber hue capped with a moderately-sized off-white head which drops some thin lace as you drink. On the nose, look for light notes of caramel and toffee along with a definite fruity overtone, likely both from esters produced during fermentation as well as Morland’s choice of hops, purported to be a blend of Challenger, Pilgrim, First Gold, and Goldings. On the...
- Bottle Size: 330-ml
- Style: Czech Pilsner
- ABV: 4.4%
- Serving Temperature: 40-45° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass
- Country: Czech Republic
Despite being a technologically advanced, modern facility, the brewery uses traditional lager brewing techniques to make their flagship beers, including open fermentation vats, cool conditioning in their lagering cellars and, of course, 100% barley malt. The result is a very successful Czech pilsner. Rebel is a looker in the glass, offering a clear golden color topped with a robust and long-lasting head of fine white foam. On the nose, expect...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Imperial Witbier w/ lemongrass & orange peel
- ABV: 8%
- Serving Temperature: 40–47° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Goblet, or Chalice Glass
- Country: United States
River Horse expects Gentle Giant should hold up in the cellar for a short bit of time, about three to six months. Beyond that though, the lemongrass will start to fade, with more of the other aspects of that Belgian yeast character coming in. For pairings: the brewery suggests going spicy—charcuterie? hot wings?—pairing up with that citrusy lemongrass emphasis.
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Imperial Pilsner
- ABV: 8%
- Serving Temperature: 38–45° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner, Tulip, Teku, or Nonic
- Country: United States
The 8% ABV does give this a bit of sturdiness in one’s cellar, but the overall delicate balance of fresh herbal and mineral hops and rounded, crisp maltiness make us inclined to enjoy this on the fresh side. Those zesty hops will slowly diminish, and overt caramelization isn’t what this beer’s built for. For pairings: we’d put this alongside Belgian frites and steamed mussels, cheesy garlic bread, or just as easily toasted bread and fresh...
