- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Nugget, Willamette

- Country: United States
Southern Pecan is the flagship brew for Lazy Magnolia, and really helped put them on the map. The brewery says this World Beer Cup bronze medal winner is the first beer made with whole roasted pecans. Other brewers have used pecans, but this is the only beer to use them in the grain bill, meaning the pecans get partially fermented in the brewing process and contribute to the core flavors of the beer rather than being an afterthought for adding aroma. Upfront, it smells fairly...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American Golden/Blonde Ale
- ABV: 5.0%
- Serving Temperature: 40-45º F
- Suggested Glassware: Flute, Pint Glass
- Hops: Saaz, Comet
- Malts: 2-Row
- Country: United States
One of Roadhouse's year-round offerings, this golden ale presents a characteristic pale golden-straw color, capped by crisp white foam. On the nose, look for a slightly herbal and somewhat earthy citrus hop aroma, overlaid with a clean malt profile boasting light crackery notes and a bit of a tart impression. That pale malt character comes through on the palate with an initial hint of sweetness upfront before drying out completely beneath...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: English Brown Ale w/ Pecans & Vanilla
- ABV: 4.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 20
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Nugget, Willamette
- Malts: Caramel Malt, Maris Otter, Wheat, Roasted Pecans, Madagascar Vanilla Beans
- Country: United States
This month we’re taking the somewhat unusual step of putting Lazy Magnolia’s year-round flagship Southern Pecan up against their seasonal Vanilla Pecan in a sort of intramural side by side comparison. For Vanilla Pecan, the brewery incorporates real Madagascar vanilla beans into their base Southern Pecan, offering a unique take on what is already a unique brown ale. On the nose, we picked up much of the same profile as in the original, with plenty of toasty and nutty malt character...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 7.5%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass, Pint Glass
- Hops: Citra, Chinook, Zeus
- Malts: 2-Row, Carafoam
- Country: United States
Originally called Rhombus, this IPA was first brewed at Roadhouse's original brewery in Wilson, WY, hence the new name. Wilson is also a Phish song, hence the lizard on the label, and if that doesn’t make any sense then you’ll just have to check out the song. In any case, we like him! Pouring a bright golden hue with a sturdy, persistent cap of vibrant foam, Wilson unleashes an alluring and inviting aroma. Look for beautifully juicy citrus notes evoking orange and grapefruit...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Imperial Rye IPA
- ABV: 9.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 80
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter, IPA Glass
- Hops: Nugget, Galaxy, Simcoe, Centennial
- Malts: 2-Row, Crystal, Carapils, Rye
- Country: United States
Pouring a bright copper hue with a fluffy cap of light tan foam, this Imperial/Double IPA delivers a pleasant array of citruses in the aroma, including grapefruit and tangerine, backed up by pine and herbal spice notes. There’s a noticeable undercurrent of caramelization here, too, and that caramelized malt character comes through quite robustly on the palate as well, creating a rich foundation for the massive dose of hops. Look for notes of candied citrus peel to land in the grapefruit-orange-tangerine realm...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Hazy Brut Double IPA
- ABV: 10%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter, IPA Glass
- Hops: Nelson Sauvin, Strata, Idaho 7, Chinook, Centennial, Zeus
- Malts: 2-Row, Carafoam, Oats
- Country: United States
This double IPA from Roadhouse presents a bright golden color topped by a lasting cap of tight-bubbled foam. A swirl of the can part way through the pour adds considerable haze to this unfiltered brew. Expressive hop notes abound in the aroma. Look for a big fruity impact here: citruses evoking shades of grapefruit and orange, tropical fruits, touches of honeydew and gooseberry. There’s also some spicy, resinous, and even cannabinoid character here as well, making for an unsurprisingly complex...
- Bottle Size: 500-ml
- Style: Belgian Saison
- ABV: 6.5%
- Serving Temperature: 45-55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip
- Country: Belgium
Dupont’s flagship saison is generally cited as a benchmark – perhaps the benchmark – for saison, and it’s easy to see why, having been produced by the farm brewery since 1844. Re-fermented in the bottle, or the can in this case, the natural carbonation builds a robust cap of foam atop the radiant golden and lightly hazed beer as it sits in our glass. (Do be sure to use a glass for this beer.) Like so many Belgian ales, saison is a yeast-driven style, and Dupont’s version delivers plenty of phenolic yeast character...
- Bottle Size: 440-ml
- Style: Dry Stout
- ABV: 4.2%
- Serving Temperature: 50-55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Challenger
- Country: Scotland
Belhaven Black certainly lives up to its name, presenting an impenetrably dark color capped by a nitrogenated, tight-bubbled head of creamy, light brown foam. In the aroma, look for luscious notes of chocolate, brown bread, and deep caramel, along with touches of roasted coffee and molasses, overlaid with lightly spicy and woody hop notes. We're big fans of beers on nitro, especially stouts, and the first thing we noticed about this beer on the palate was how slick and silky it is, an impression augmented by the nitrogen...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale
- ABV: 10%
- Serving Temperature: 50–57° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Chalice, Goblet, or Snifter
- Country: Denmark
Monk’s Brew pours a reasonably dark, golden brown topped by resilient tan foam; this beer leaves excellent lacing behind as things subside. Beautifully smooth aromatics from the start, packed with caramelization and dried dark fruits, along with rather bright notes of raspberry jam and rich nuttiness. This tends to land in the general vicinity of Belgian quads, and it has aged to perfection...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Strong Saison w/ Matcha Green Tea
- ABV: 7.5%
- Serving Temperature: 45–52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Chalice, Nonic, or Chardonnay Glass
- Country: Canada
This month we’re excited to be able to offer our Rare Beer Club members an exclusive release from the folks at Brasserie Dunham, brewed just for the club. Concubine is a saison brewed with Lemondrop hops and matcha tea, and is the latest in a long series of delicious tea beers created by Dunham. Concubine’s grist consists mostly of Canadian 2-row pale malt...
