- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Chinook, Cascade, Michigan Copper
- Malts: Brewer’s 2-Row, Caramel 80, Munich 20, Chocolate, Black, Roast, Oats
- Country: United States
Pouring a very, very, dark coffee-like brown color, this 2011 Great American Beer Festival Gold medal winning oatmeal stout offers up quite the inviting aroma. Deep roasty notes of scorched bread and coffee are underpinned by hints of caramel, toffee, and a hint of grassy, herbal hops. With a grain bill as complex as Back Road's, it's not surprising the flavor profile is both robust and interesting. Expect big roasty notes along with flashes...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Tripel
- ABV: 8.4%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 14
- Serving Temperature: 45-52º F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter, or Goblet
- Hops: Tettnanger
- Malts: Pilsen, Flaked Oats
- Country: United States
Pouring a hazy, rich golden color and topped by a robust head of foam that laces nicely as it recedes, this brew is certainly inviting in appearance and looks just like what we’d expect from a traditional Belgian-style Triple (or Tripel). Made with an authentic Belgian Trappist yeast strain, it's no surprise we picked up plenty of traditional Belgian yeast character. Look for fruity overtones reminiscent of stone fruits and maybe a little white...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Vienna Lager
- ABV: 5.3%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 17
- Serving Temperature: 40-45º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass or Flute
- Hops: Chinook, German Tradition
- Malts: Brewer’s 2-Row, Ashburn, Munich 20, Caramel 60
- Country: United States
Schild Brau is Millsteam's flagship beer, having been around since the brewery's opening in 1985, and over the years this Vienna-style lager has brought home a lot of hardware from numerous brewing competitions, including multiple Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals from the G.A.B.F. as well as Gold from the 2010 World Beer Cup. Presenting a clear copperish-amber hue with some off-white foam, this brew offers up an inviting and classic aroma. Look
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Schwarzbier
- ABV: 6.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 35
- Serving Temperature: 47-55º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass or Mug
- Hops: Mt. Hood, Cascade, Chinook, Tettnanger
- Malts: Pilsen, Caramel 20L, Caramel 60L, Black, Chocolate
- Country: United States
Sprecher’s Black Bavarian is brewed in the German Schwarzbier (“Black Beer”) style, and is one of the more robust and hearty versions we’ve seen of this lager style. On the pour, expect a very, very dark brown color with reddish flashes and a fluffy head. In the aroma department, notes of brown bread and chocolate come to the fore, with some nice toasty notes and an impression of moderate sweetness. We also were intrigued by a certain subtle...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: New England IPA w/ Grapefruit
- ABV: 6.8%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 57
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass, Pint Glass
- Hops: Chinook, Centennial, Warrior, Rakau, Amarillo
- Malts: Brewer’s 2-Row, Wheat, Rye, Oats
- Country: United States
Millie Hop presents a well-hazed golden orange color, topped with a prominent head of off-white foam that leaves sheets of lace as we drain the glass. Produced with real grapefruit, it’s no surprise this New England-style IPA offers up plenty of grapefruit character on the nose, but there are a good deal of additional fruity notes in this highly aromatic brew. Look for lime, lemon, mild orange, and apricot-like stone fruit notes, along with...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Session IPA
- ABV: 5.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 40
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass, Pint Glass, Mug
- Hops: Zythos, Mosaic, Centennial
- Malts: Pilsen, Pale Ale, Carapils, Wheat, Oats
- Country: United States
Sprecher’s Juicy IPA is sort of a session IPA meets New England-style hazy IPA kind of thing, offering up a moderately hazed golden orange appearance capped by an ample head of fluffy off-white foam that lingers long and laces well. On the nose, we really were drawn in by the nice dose of citrus in concert with tropical fruit notes upon a softly floral backdrop. The citrus notes offer a bit of everything: a little lemon, lime, orange, tangerine...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Belgian-style IPA
- ABV: 8.4%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 55
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter, IPA Glass
- Hops: Tettnanger, Mosaic, Ekuanot
- Malts: Pilsen, Flaked Oats
- Country: United States
For Pineapple X-Press, Sprecher starts with their Belgian-style tripel as the base, but goes in a very hoppy direction by brewing and dry-hopping with juicy New World hops to deliver a bold Belgian-style IPA. On the pour, we get a lightly hazy copper color with a plentiful cap of long-lasting foam. There’s a complex array of subtle and not-so-subtle aromas here; look for notes of tropical fruits, including pineapple, along with citrus rind...
- Bottle Size: 330-ml
- Style: Weizenbock
- ABV: 7.7%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 17
- Serving Temperature: 45-52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Goblet, Chalice, Tulip, Flute
- Hops: Perle, Magnum
- Malts: Light Barley Malt, Wheat Malt
- Country: Germany
Vitus is a prime example of Weihenstephan’s quality, as this benchmark weizenbock has taken home numerous awards including Gold at the 2018 World Beer Awards, and 2018 European Beer Star. As a style, weizenbock can be thought of as a sort of a mash-up of weissbier and doppelbock. Most tend to be on the darker side, like a big dunkelweizen, but Vitus is brewed in a lighter-colored “helles” style. Expect a very hazy golden hue on the pour...
- Bottle Size: 440-ml
- Style: Irish Red Ale (Nitrogenated)
- ABV: 5.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 23
- Serving Temperature: 40-45° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Challenger, Admiral, Boadicea, First Gold, Wye Goldings
- Country: England
Don't be alarmed if this beer opens with a bit of enthusiasm. Wexford uses a pressurized nitro "widget," a popular feature among some British and Irish beers that often are referred to as cream ales due to the nitro smoothness. (Not to be confused with American cream ales, which are a different style.) Definitely pour this one into a glass to observe the rich, dense, light beige mousse of very persistent nitrogen foam that forms atop this...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: American Barleywine
- ABV: 10.5%
- Serving Temperature: 50–57° F
- Suggested Glassware: Snifter, Chalice, Tulip, or Teku
- Country: United States
The assertive hop character of this beer has us inclined to enjoy this on the fresher side for maximum effect. That said, the caramelization isn’t a dominant note just yet, and this could age gracefully for a couple years or so, depending on how caramel levels ramp up over time. Perhaps longer, but the hops and overall vibe of this barleywine make us want to pop bottles in the soon times. For food pairings, we’re thinking of the top notes...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Imperial Stout
- ABV: 11.5%
- Serving Temperature: 50–57° F
- Suggested Glassware: Snifter, Small Nonic, or Tulip Glass
- Country: Canada
In terms of cellaring-time suggestions, the brewery recommends a max of three to five years. There’s a lot of core bitterness to this imperial stout, plus a potent ABV, and pretty minimal caramelization at this point, so we wouldn’t be too shy about aging bottles of this for some considerable time. Plenty of bitterness right now from those hops and roasted-malt/licorice notes. For pairing with food, the brewery suggests lamb, mac n’ cheese...
