This pale ale from Roughtail is brewed in the vein of a New England-style hazy IPA, but at an American Pale Ale gravity, giving us a sessionable and super-flavorful pale ale just dripping with juicy, fruity notes. On the pour, we get a very hazed golden orange color, topped with a rocky head of off-white foam. On the nose, there’s a very inviting fruity character, with tangerine-like candied citrus notes, stone fruit impressions conjuring...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American Amber/Red Ale
- ABV: 5.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 25
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Chinook, Hallertau Mittelfrüh
- Malts: Pilsner Malt, Wheat Malt, CaraMalt, Roasted Barely
- Country: United States
This red ale from DuClaw presents a lightly hazy reddish brown color topped by a light beige cap of foam. As a style, red/amber ales are a mixed bag, with most tending towards the maltier side, while others deliver quite a big hop blast. Misfit Red offers us a nice balance between malty and hoppy notes in the aroma; look for plenty of toast and caramel, with wisps of cocoa, as well as brighter notes of citrus zest and spice. That balance...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Hefeweizen
- ABV: 5.1%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 11
- Serving Temperature: 40-45º F
- Suggested Glassware: Weizen Glass, Pilsner Glass
- Hops: Hallertau Tradition
- Malts: 2-Row, White Wheat, Dextrapils, Chit Malt, Rice Hulls, Acidulated Malt
- Country: United States
This hefeweizen pours a characteristically cloudy golden hue, topped with a spritely off-white head of foam. The traditional hefeweizen yeast strain with which Polterweisse was fermented drives the aroma profile, which delivers some obvious banana-like esters and bubblegum impressions, as well as a mild dash of spice which merges with the somewhat grassy Hallertau noble hops. A wheaty undercurrent pops through, as well. On the palate...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Fruited Sour Ale
- ABV: 5.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 10
- Serving Temperature: 42-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip or Pint Glass
- Hops: Saaz
- Malts: Pilsner, Red Wheat, Unmalted Wheat
- Country: United States
DuClaw’s line of Sour Me beers began with their Sour Me This kettle sour, which has spawned multiple variations including Sour Me Dark & Stormy, Sour Me Mimosa, and the wonderfully named Sour Me Unicorn Farts. Sour Me America (in 16-oz cans) a.k.a. Lil’ Sour Me America (in 12-oz cans) was designed in homage to the classic red, white, and blue (cherry, lime, and raspberry) ice pops many of us will remember from our younger days. Brewed with...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: New England-style Hazy IPA
- ABV: 6.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 55
- Serving Temperature: 50-55º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass or Pint Glass
- Hops: Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe
- Malts: 2-Row, White Wheat, Flaked Oats, Dextrapils, Caramel Steam, Acidulated Malt, Rice Hulls
- Country: United States
Pouring a very hazy golden orange with plenty of persistent foam, this brew – not surprisingly – offers tons of orange aromas that jump out right away with a nice balance between juice and zest. There’s a touch of tangerine among the citrus notes, as well, plus a dose of softer tropical fruits, hints of stone fruits, and a certain woodsy and spicy herbal character. Being a “citrus ballad”, in Roughtail’s words, it’s also no surprise to find...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: New England-style Hazy IPA
- ABV: 6.3%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 30
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass or Pint Glass
- Hops: Citra, Amarillo
- Malts: Pilsner, Flaked Oats, Torrified Wheat
- Country: United States
This New England-style IPA presents a super hazy golden color capped by a vigorous head of rocky foam. On the nose, look for citrus juice and rind conjuring grapefruit, orange, and lime, with secondary notes of melon and passion fruit. On the palate, this hazy IPA comes through super juicy with orange notes backed by a lime impression, some stone fruit, a touch of honeydew, and a light jasmine-like floral tone. The malts come through...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Session IPA
- ABV: 4.8%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 30
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass or Pint Glass
- Hops: Sultana, Simcoe, Motueka, Lemondrop
- Malts: Pilsner, Raw Wheat, Vienna, Dextrine
- Country: United States
This session IPA from DuClaw presents a bright golden color with just a hint of haze, topped with a robust cap of rocky foam. The aromas coming from the glass are nicely fruity, with prominent tropical character evoking soft pineapple and mango, bolstered by notes of citrus steering towards the vibrant lime and lemon spectrum, along with some piney, herbal, resinous, and floral tones. On the palate, we get a good balance between the juicy...
- Bottle Size: 500-ml
- Style: Vienna Lager
- ABV: 5.3%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Flute, Pilsner Glass
- Hops: Saaz
- Malts: Vienna, Melanoidin
- Country: Austria
Known as Wiener Original in its Austrian homeland, Ottakringer’s Vienna Lager is a benchmark of the style and based on a century-old recipe. Winner of gold medals at the 2019 World Beer Awards and the 2017 Austrian Beer Challenge, this brew presents a crystal clear light amber-copper hue topped by an ample head of light beige foam. On the nose, it’s classic Saaz noble hops right away, offering herbal spice notes which meld with light floral...
- Bottle Size: 330-ml
- Style: Organic Saison
- ABV: 7.5%
- Serving Temperature: 45-55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Flute
- Country: Belgium
Forêt presents a lightly hazy golden orange color topped by a cap of fluffy foam. On the nose, we get a complex aroma, as we expect for a Dupont beer. Look for plenty of fruity esters including pomelo-like citrus notes, stone fruits, hints of pear or apple, and touches of melon. Accompanying the fruity character is a nice dose of lightly phenolic spice hinting at clove and white pepper. We picked up a bit of grassy, earthy, and spicy hops...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Tripel
- ABV: 8%
- Serving Temperature: 40–47° F
- Suggested Glassware: Chalice, Goblet, or Tulip Glass
- Country: Belgium
At 8% ABV, this tripel is sturdy and potent enough to stand some cellaring time. That said, the subtle hop bitterness will ease up slightly over time, letting perceived sweetness amp up a bit. Personally, we’d enjoy this sooner rather than later for best results. For pairings: look to traditional tripel pairings such as various seafoods with lemon and butter, or creamy cheeses, which both will work well alongside the pepper and honey...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Amber Quadrupel
- ABV: 12.8%
- Serving Temperature: 50–57° F
- Suggested Glassware: Goblet, Chalice, or Tulip Glass
- Country: Belgium
The quad has got a very high ABV and is refermented in the bottle, such that it’s built to last and develop further in one’s cellar. This should continue to develop nice caramelization and sherry character with additional cellaring time. Vibrant red fruits and amber maltiness have it primed for pairings with roasted pork, turkey, and charcuterie.
