Foothills' People's Porter presents a deep brown hue with reddish flashes and a cap of medium brown foam. On the nose, chocolate and caramel malts are apparent, along with hints of coffee, a touch of woodiness, and some herbal, grassy notes. Look for the theme to continue on the palate, although with more deeply toasted and roasted notes. Bitter chocolate, dark roasted coffee, scorched caramel, and a bit of wood smoke are noticeable too, along...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Cascadian Dark Ale
- ABV: 5.2%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 45
- Serving Temperature: 48-55º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Tulip
- Hops: Columbus, Mt. Hood
- Malts: Pale, Black, Crystal 75
- Country: United States
Dick Danger Ale presents a very deep garnet-brown color topped by a cap of beige foam. On the nose, expect a nice balance between malts and hops. We picked up some deep-down toast and plenty of caramel which form a rich undercurrent, topped with touches of earthy hops with subtle citrus and wisps of licorice and pine. On the palate, a deliciously malty core offers layers of roast, caramel, and light nuttiness. Look for a touch of residual...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Witbier
- ABV: 5.1%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 5
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Flute, Tulip, Pint Glass
- Hops: Azacca
- Malts: Superior Pilsen, Carolina Red Wheat, Acidulated, Carolina Oat Malt
- Country: United States
This witbier from Foothills presents a pale amber-orange color with a moderate cap of white foam and significant haze, as we expect for the style. This traditional Belgian style of wheat beer is typically spiced with coriander and orange peel, but Foothills has upped the ante by adding turmeric, lime, and ginger to the mix, as well. The result is an intriguing aroma offering a complex fruity-spicy interplay atop a lightly toasty wheaty note. On..
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 6.2%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 65
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass or Pint Glass
- Hops: Citra, Azacca, Simcoe, Centennial
- Malts: Pale, Crystal 15, Carapils, Munich
- Country: United States
This “northwest” style of IPA pours a hazy medium amber color topped by a well-formed head of light beige foam that drops some lace as it recedes. On the nose, we picked herbal and earthy tones with a touch of pine, along with citrus notes leaning toward orange, all atop a caramelized malty undertone. In the flavor, look for plenty of bold citrus zest to come through upfront, deftly merging into a resinous herbal and lightly spicy character. The...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 7.4%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 82
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass, Tulip, Pint Glass
- Hops: Apollo, Citra, Azacca, Cascade, Pacific Jade
- Malts: Superior Pilsen, Caramel 60, Acidulated
- Country: United States
Pouring a bright golden color with good clarity and a voluminous head of dense foam that leaves plenty of lace as it drops, this Gold Medal winner at the 2017 North Carolina Brewers' Cup looks inviting as it rests in the glass, offering aromatic fireworks as we take a sniff. Look for an orange-grapefruit-lemon citrus character along with tropical notes akin to pineapple and passion fruit. We picked up some soft floral overtones, too, along...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American IPA w/ Grapefruit
- ABV: 6.2%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 60
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass or Pint Glass
- Hops: Cascade, Centennial, Trident
- Malts: Pale, Crystal 15, Vienna, Carapils
- Country: United States
This IPA presents a quite hazy orange-amber color in the glass, topped by a sizable head of off-white foam. Expect a boldly citric aroma with layers of orange, tangerine and, of course, grapefruit. Look for some softer tropical fruit and floral impressions to pop through, as well. The team at Dick’s uses real grapefruit juice and zest in this IPA and, along with generous dry-hopping, the result is an explosively citric flavor. Zesty grapefruit...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Irish Red Ale
- ABV: 4.3%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 43-48° F
- Serving Temperature: 34
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip or Pint Glass
- Country: Ireland
What a treat – a craft-brewed traditional Irish red ale from the Emerald Isle itself! Pouring a very deep red-amber with plenty of tight foam, this Gold Medal winning ale (at the 2013 Dublin Craft Beer Cup) looks great in the glass. Big, prominent bread crust notes burst forth in the aroma, quite toasty indeed, bolstered by a touch of roast and cocoa powder, with impressions of earthy hops. On the palate, look for well-caramelized malts and...
- Bottle Size: 440-ml
- Style: Irish Dry Stout (Nitrogenated)
- ABV: 4.3%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 36
- Serving Temperature: 48-55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip or Pint Glass
- Country: Ireland
Made with five different locally sourced Irish malts, O’Hara’s Irish Stout has been impressing lovers of this style and has been pulling in competition medals for decades, including Double Gold and the Championship Trophy at the 2000 International Brewing Industry Awards. Pouring an extremely dark hue with garnet highlights and a persistent cap of light brown foam which laces the glass as we drink, this stout looks great as it presents its...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Imperial Porter w/ Vanilla & Coffee Beans
- ABV: 9.8%
- Serving Temperature: 50–57° F
- Suggested Glassware: Snifter, Tulip, or Small Nonic
- Country: United States
This batch of Convenient Distraction is drinking great right now. The coffee character and aromatic intensity might fade a bit with time, but this also has the high ABV and sturdiness for some modest cellaring. For pairings: the combo of chocolate, vanilla, and coffee have us looking towards a wide range of desserts: tiramisu, affogato, flourless chocolate cake…
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Blonde Ale & Lambic Sour Ale Blend
- ABV: 6.5%
- Serving Temperature: 45–53° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Lambic Tumbler, Flute, or Chardonnay Glass
- Country: Belgium
This blend from Brouwerij Kerkom struck two of our favorite notes—and with force. In the aromatics, the blonde-ale aspect of the blend showed through the most, offering up notes of spice and other soft phenolics: a heady, toasty, yeasty Belgian pale ale, with the undercurrent of that spontaneously fermented lambic element beneath. Reuss, a deftly handled blend from brewer Marc Limet, is actually composed of about 80% blonde and 20% lambic.
