Backpocket's Slingshot pours a deep, rich, reddish-brown with crystal clarity when held to the light, and a cap of light beige foam. From our first go at the aroma we could tell this was a true-to-style dunkel lager—a style hailing from Munich, Bavaria. Look for prominent malty notes of fresh bread and toast, touches of caramel, a dollop of spicy, herbal hops, and a hint of dried fruit that we often pick up in this style of beer, and others...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Hazy Pale Ale
- ABV: 5.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 30
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass, Tulip, IPA Glass
- Hops: Mosaic (organic
- Malts: 2-Row, Carapils (all organic)
- Country: United States
This hazy pale ale is a showcase for the appropriately named Mosaic hop, a variety renowned for its complex profile that offers a little bit of everything. Pouring a well-hazed golden hue topped with a robust head of fluffy foam, this brew offers up plenty of aromas right away. We picked up berry and stone fruit notes most prominently, backed up by tropical fruits, hints of tangerine, grass, and earth, and a floral overtone, among other...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Helles Lager
- ABV: 5.2%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 15
- Serving Temperature: 40-45º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass, Flute
- Hops: Hallertauer Perle, Hallertauer Mittelfrüh
- Malts: Pilsner, Vienna, Carapils
- Country: United States
“Helles” is a German term meaning “pale” or “bright”, and is used parallel to how Anglo-American brewers use the term “pale” in “pale ale.” This interpretation from Backpocket is one of the brewery’s first beers, and it’s easy to see why it’s stuck around all these years as a year-round offering. Bright golden in the glass and topped with a head of white foam, Gold Coin offers up subtle noble hop character in the aroma, with softly floral...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American Pale Lager
- ABV: 4.5%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 17
- Serving Temperature: 40-45º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass or Flute
- Hops: Perle (organic)
- Malts: Pilsen, Carapils, 10L Munich (all organic)
- Country: United States
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 6.7%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 58
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass or Pint Glass
- Hops: Amarillo, Columbus, Simcoe, Centennial
- Malts: 2-Row, White Wheat, Caramunich
- Country: United States
Presenting a radiant orange-gold color with a fluffy head of off-white foam, Raygun IPA offers up an invitingly fruity aroma right from the pour. Look for a nicely citric character offering notes of orange and grapefruit zest, along with hints of orange blossoms, some herbal impressions, and touches of pine resin. In the flavor department, the malts offer a very tasty, lightly caramelized note along with some bready touches, and there’s a...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: New England-style IPA
- ABV: 7.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 50
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass or Pint Glass
- Hops: Magnum, Chinook, Simcoe, Centennial, Mosaic (all organic)
- Malts: Pilsen, Carapils, Rolled Oats (all organic)
- Country: United States
This organic New England-style IPA from Protector pours a bright and very hazy yellow-gold color topped by plenty of foam that laces the glass nicely. In the aroma, bold tropical fruit notes jumped out to us first, evoking passion fruit, papaya, and hints of pineapple, followed by zesty citrus notes reminiscent of grapefruit peel. We picked up some softer floral overtones here too, making for an invitingly multifaceted aroma profile. On the...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: West Coast-style IPA
- ABV: 6.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 60
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass or Pint Glass
- Hops: Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe (all organic)
- Malts: Pilsen, Carapils (all organic)
- Country: United States
This west coast style IPA presents a bright golden color, as we expect for the style, with a slight haze and a cap of off-white foam that laces as it recedes. On the nose, look for a bit of a fruit cocktail impression as a complex amalgam of aromas issue forth, including citrus notes breaking toward candied orange and tangerine, tropical fruits offering mango and passion fruit, floral tones evoking rose petals and citrus blossoms, apricot-like...
- Bottle Size: 500-ml
- Style: European Pale Lager
- ABV: 5.4%
- Serving Temperature: 40-45° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass, Flute
- Country: Poland
Unpasteurized beers are common in the craft beer scene in the US, where many brews are bottle conditioned with carbonation forming naturally as fermentation continues in the bottle. Unpasteurized European lagers are less common, but we’re digging this one from Poland. Though unpasteurized, this brew is filtered, so there’s no haze or yeast in suspension as it rests in our glasses, presenting a bright golden color topped by a large head...
- Bottle Size: 500-ml
- Style: Dry-Hopped Zwickelbier
- ABV: 4.9%
- Serving Temperature: 42-47° F
- Suggested Glassware: Stange, Pilsner Glass, Mug
- Hops: Bitburger Siegelhopfen, Citra, Mosaic
- Country: Germany
Zwickelbier is a variation on kellerbier, which is a German style known for being unfiltered and matured in cellars in wood casks left not completely sealed, which allows much of the carbonation to escape. Zwickel (or Zwickl) casks, however, are usually sealed for a while before bottling, allowing more carbonation to build up. They are also usually crafted to be a bit lighter in hop flavor, though this dry-hopped version from Bitburger and...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Spiced Winter Warmer
- ABV: 9%
- Serving Temperature: 52–59° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter, or Goblet
- Country: United States
Given the 9% ABV, style and overall flavor profile, there seems to be room for a bit of cellaring time for the West Sixth Christmas Ale, but we suggest to drink now and celebrate the season. For pairings, look to hearty stews and caramelized desserts.
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Blended Quadrupel aged in Burgundy, Port, & other barrels
- ABV: 11%
- Serving Temperature: 52–59° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Chalice, or Goblet
- Country: Belgium
Straffe Hendrik Xmas Blend 2021 is appropriate for some cellaring time. The brewery gives an upper range of five years, and we’ve had three-year-old versions of their 2018 blend that were exceptional. For pairings, we’d use that combination of dense caramels, red fruits, and honeyed elements alongside some pork tenderloin, Crème brûlée, or vanilla-driven desserts.
We’re so proud of our featured beers, that we list them going all the way back to 1995
