Yazoo’s pilsner offers us a gleaming golden straw color with excellent clarity beneath a cap of pale foam. In the aroma, look for a dry malt impression with touches of cracker, lightly toasted bread crust, and a hint of hay. It comes across quite fruity for a pils due to the brewers’ choice of modern German hop varieties. We picked up stone fruits, a touch of citrus, and even some very light tropical tones. On the palate, we really enjoyed the central malt core...

Tivoli’s hefeweizen pours a bright golden yellow hue with light to moderate haze, and is capped by a head of white foam. On the nose, look for a classic hefeweizen yeast-driven aroma offering notes of banana, bubblegum, and coriander-like herbal spice, all atop a lightly bready malt undertone. As we take a sip, the first thing we notice is how fruity it comes across as the banana notes join up with an almost candied lemon quality to explode across the palate...

Little Tables is a brand new addition to Yazoo’s Embrace the Funk series, which began in 2012 and features a variety of sour, wild, and spontaneously fermented ales. We’re excited to have the opportunity to bring this to our members so shortly after its release. Pouring a very hazy straw color with a cap of white foam, Little Tables almost resembles a witbier as it rests in our glass. On the nose, big yeasty, phenolic, herbal notes jump out right away, and...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz

- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 30

- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass, Tall Flute
- Hops: Magnum, Saaz
- Malts: Pilsner, Rye Pale, Acidulated
- Country: United States
Despite the nod to Bohemia in the name, this pils is brewed somewhat more in the German style than the Czech style, though the prominent Saaz hops are quintessentially Czech. Bo Girl pours a golden straw color with good clarity, capped by a robust head of pale foam that retains well and leaves plenty of lace as it slowly recedes. On the nose, look for grassy and spicy Czech Saaz hop notes, along with slight floral tones, hints of pine and lime peel, and...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 6.2%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 58
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass, Tulip, Pint Glass
- Hops: Citra, Mosaic
- Malts: Pale, Flaked Wheat, Malted Oats
- Country: United States
Hop Perfect has been Yazoo’s core year-round IPA for several years now, and it’s easy to see why. Presenting a light amber hue with a head of pale beige foam, this IPA offers up quite a bold aroma as we lean in for a sniff. Look for juicy and resinous notes with lots of big candied citrus notes evoking tangerine, orange, and grapefruit, backed by soft tropical fruits akin to mango and pineapple, and a dose of peach-like stone fruits. It’s quite multifaceted, as we’d...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: New England-style Hazy IPA
- ABV: 5.4%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 35
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass or Pint Glass
- Hops: Strata, Sabro
- Malts: Pilsner, Malted Oats, Flaked Wheat, Vienna
- Country: United States
Hazy IPAs are all the rage these days, and Yazoo offers up another interpretation with their Calla IPA featuring a pair of lesser-known hop varieties. On the pour, we get a well-hazed vibrant yellowy golden color capped by pale foam. An inviting aroma issues notes of fresh citrus tending toward tangerine backed up by milder grapefruit and hints of lemon-lime. Look for some grassy tones here too, amidst some herbal, spicy flourishes. The aroma profile manifests...

- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 35
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass, Tulip, Pint Glass

This “juicy IPA” from Tivoli presents a slightly hazed bright orange-copper color with plenty of pale foam that laces the glass nicely. On the nose, a bright citrus character jumps out right away with a bold note of juicy mandarins with wisps of orange, along with tropical notes evoking pineapple and mango, a dash of peach that strengthens as we swirl it a bit, some melon-like tones, and even some hints of gooseberry. In the flavor department, the malt...
- Bottle Size: 330-ml
- Style: Saison
- ABV: 5.5%
- Serving Temperature: 47-52° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Flute, Goblet, Willi Becher
- Country: Belgium
Saison is the quintessential Belgian farmhouse ale, typically brewed in winter and enjoyed during and after a hard day’s work in the warmer months to follow, very much like the related French style, Bière de Garde. VBDCK’s version presents a bright golden hue in the glass, topped by a sizable cap of just-off-white foam. As is typical of saisons and Belgian ales in general, the aroma is quite yeast-driven, offering up plenty of earthy and herbal character. There’s...
- Bottle Size: 330-ml
- Style: Flanders Red Ale
- ABV: 6.6%
- Serving Temperature: 42-55° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter, Goblet
- Country: Belgium
Cuvée des Jacobins’ more common beer, Rouge, and this month’s selection, Prestige, are brewed in the tradition of Flemish sour ales, undergoing mixed fermentation with Cerevisiae ale yeast as well as wild Brettanomyces yeast and Lactobacillus, the latter responsible for the style’s pronounced sourness. While the standard Rouge is aged for 18 months, the higher-ABV Prestige is aged over 24 months in huge barrels known as “foeders” which hold several hundred...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Foudre-Aged Wild Ale
- ABV: 7.5%
- Serving Temperature: 46–53° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Goblet or Nonic Glass
- Country: United States
We don’t come across too many US produced foudre-aged wild ales, though we certainly try to. Funkwerks has taken their third batch of this funky, wild ale, a variation on their award winning saison, and allowed that delightful core beer to do its aging thing in their 800-gallon Hungarian oak foudre for over 18 months. Hungarian oak, if you’re not familiar with it, has many virtues to add to brewing. Like other oak, it adds flavor, tannin...

- Style: Wheatwine brewed with Artisanal Red Wheat
- ABV: 8%
- Serving Temperature: 38–45° F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Teku, or Nonic

We’re pleased to be able to offer Broken Bow’s Wheatwine Ale as a Rare Beer Club exclusive this month. This will be available only to our club members and through the brewery’s taproom in Tuckahoe. Wheatwines or wheatwine style beers haven’t been around too long in the overall history of beer, though many wheat beers have existed for centuries, even millennia. Wheatwines, as we would consider them today, got their start in the 1980s when home...
