In the aroma, look for luscious, almost cake-like notes of toast and deep caramel to jump out immediately, backed by touches of dried dark fruits and some herbal, floral hop tones. When you pour this beer you’ll see we ain’t lyin’ – this is one black beer. But Xingu is not to be confused with the German style of black beer known as Schwarzbier; this is really a different species and is quite unusual. On the nose, there are not the big roasty notes one expects from such a dark brew. Oud Beersel’s 2014 Oude Geuze is a spontaneously fermented, traditional lambic beer that’s brewed with just water, barley malt, wheat, and hops. This blended lambic combines lambic beers from different years aged in wooden barrels, and blends younger and older lambics to create an exceptionally balanced Oude Geuze release. The 2014 vintage is drinking perfectly right now, with an easy-drinking poise that remains hugely expressive at the same time.
