- Hops: Columbus, Loral
- Malts: 2-Row, Special B, Double Roasted Crystal, Carafoam
- Country: United States
Pouring an attractive deep brown with vibrant reddish edges and a cap of beige foam, Bed of Nails is an attractive brown ale as it rests in the glass. In the aroma, look for luscious, almost cake-like notes of toast and deep caramel to jump out immediately, backed by touches of dried dark fruits and some herbal, floral hop tones. The story continues much the same way on the palate, where we get a central core of brown bread, moderate toastiness...
- Bottle Size: 16-oz
- Style: American Lager
- ABV: 4.6%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 22
- Serving Temperature: 40-45º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pilsner Glass, Pint Glass
- Hops: Palisade, Tettnang
- Malts: German Pilsen, Carafoam
- Country: United States
Hi-Wire’s core year-round lager presents a bright golden straw color with good clarity, topped by a vibrant head of just off-white foam. German noble hops come through as the centerpiece of the aroma, especially after a good swirl. Expect a distinct floral spiciness to jump out, along with some grassy touches, hints of lemon rind, and a little woodiness. Lurking below is a dash of crackery malt, pointing to a very clean and crisp quality to...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Irish-style Red Ale
- ABV: 5.2%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 22
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass or Mug
- Hops: Horizon
- Malts: 2-Row, Ashburne, Melanoidin, Caramel 60, Caramel 80, Roasted Barley
- Country: United States
Pouring an attractive copper-amber hue with good clarity, Green 19 rests in our glass below a sizeable head of foam that laces the sides nicely as it slowly recedes to a persistent collar. On the nose, we picked up prominent citrus notes that are quite resinous and zesty, with accompanying floral overtones and a dash of pine, all overlaid upon a good dose of malty caramelization lurking below. Look for that malty core to come through very sturdy...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Schwarzbier
- ABV: 5.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 28
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Flute, Tulip, Pilsner Glass
- Hops: Hallertau Mittelfrüh, Magnum
- Malts: Pilsner, Munich, Chocolate Wheat, Melanoidin, Dextrin, Special B
- Country: United States
This schwarzbier (German for “black beer”) unsurprisingly presents a super dark brown color – virtually black – capped by a robust head of medium brown foam. Schwarzbiers can run the gamut from quite mildly toasty on one end to decidedly roasty on the other, and Dark Helmet orients itself more on the robust side. On the nose, look for plenty of toasty elements conjuring impressions of scorched caramel, roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate...
- Bottle Size: 16-oz
- Style: Double IPA
- ABV: 9.0%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 65
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: Tulip, Snifter, IPA Glass, Pint Glass
- Hops: Columbus, Ekuanot, Cascade Cryo
- Malts: 2-Row, Carafoam, T50
- Country: United States
This double IPA is one of Hi-Wire’s year-round flagships, and after sampling it, it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. It presents a golden-copper color in the glass, capped by a good deal of off-white foam that drops lots of sticky lace as we drink it down. On the nose, we get bold citrus notes evoking a composite of candied orange, grapefruit, and lime, backed by impressions of honeydew, mild tropical fruits, herbal spice, and a perfumed...
- Bottle Size: 16-oz
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 6.7%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 55
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass, Tulip, Pint Glass
- Hops: Centennial, Columbus, Mosaic
- Malts: 2-Row, Carafoam, Munich I, T50
- Country: United States
Presenting a vibrant golden orange color with a head of pale foam, this IPA offers a good look and an inviting array of aromas as it rests in the glass. Look for lots of citrus and tropical fruit notes to jump out in the aroma – quite resinous with a good swirl – including notes of grapefruit, mango, orange, and passion fruit, plus some more subtle tones of sliced melon, stone fruits, earthy spice, and citrus blossoms. On the palate, those...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: American IPA
- ABV: 6.1%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 55
- Serving Temperature: 45-50º F
- Suggested Glassware: IPA Glass, Tulip, Pint Glass
- Hops: Horizon, Chinook, Cascade, Citra
- Malts: 2-Row, Munich, Amber, Victory
- Country: United States
Pouring an attractive copper-amber hue with good clarity, Green 19 rests in our glass below a sizeable head of foam that laces the sides nicely as it slowly recedes to a persistent collar. On the nose, we picked up prominent citrus notes that are quite resinous and zesty, with accompanying floral overtones and a dash of pine, all overlaid upon a good dose of malty caramelization lurking below. Look for that malty core to come through very sturdy...
- Bottle Size: 440-ml
- Style: Scottish Ale
- ABV: 5.2%
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Thistle Glass or Pint Glass
- Hops: Challenger, Golding
- Malts: Pale, Crystal, Black
- Country: Scotland
This is considered one of the benchmarks of the “Scottish Ale” style, due both to its long history and its impressive quality. Scottish Ales have traditionally been more malt-oriented brews than the typically more hoppy English ale styles, and this is a prime example. Also, note that the related Wee Heavy style, which is often refered to as “Scotch Ale”, is a much stronger (and sometimes peaty/smoky) style not to be confused with the much more...
- Bottle Size: 12-oz
- Style: Black Lager
- ABV: 4.6%
- Int’l Bittering Units (IBUs): 19.5
- Serving Temperature: 45-50° F
- Suggested Glassware: Pint Glass, Tulip, Oversized Wine Glass
- Hops: Hallertau
- Country: Brazil
When you pour this beer you’ll see we ain’t lyin’ – this is one black beer. But Xingu is not to be confused with the German style of black beer known as Schwarzbier; this is really a different species and is quite unusual. On the nose, there are not the big roasty notes one expects from such a dark brew. Instead there’s an impressive complexity including touches of sweetness akin to treacle (which is like a heavy, almost medicinal molasses)...
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Oude Geuze
- ABV: 6%
- Serving Temperature: 46–54° F
- Suggested Glassware: Lambic Tumbler, Flute, or Tulip Glass
- Country: Belgium
Oud Beersel’s 2014 Oude Geuze is a spontaneously fermented, traditional lambic beer that’s brewed with just water, barley malt, wheat, and hops. This blended lambic combines lambic beers from different years aged in wooden barrels, and blends younger and older lambics to create an exceptionally balanced Oude Geuze release. The 2014 vintage is drinking perfectly right now, with an easy-drinking poise that remains hugely expressive at the same time.
- Bottle Size: 750-ml
- Style: Russian-style Imperial Stout w/ Roasted Coffee Beans & Belgian Chocolate
- ABV: 11%
- Serving Temperature: 50–57° F
- Suggested Glassware: Snifter, Small Nonic, or Tulip
- Country: Belgium
Kollusion should continue to age gracefully in the bottle if you choose to cellar some. That 11% ABV and tight construction suggest this should do nicely with a bit more caramel and sherry-like oxidative qualities. For food pairings: the brewery suggests chocolate brownies, or a Crème Malakoff (an almond cream trifle from Austria that sounds absolutely delicious).
